This week we commenced our swimming program. Students have done well so far and have enjoyed every minute! Overall students have done a fantastic job of representing our school and showing school values.
Congratulations to our Junior School Council representatives who received their badges on Wednesday.
Literacy
In Reading we have been working on monitoring and correcting our reading. We focused on asking ourselves does it sound right, look write and make sense?
This week students have been exploring Nouns, Verbs and Adverbs in various texts.
In Writing students have completed a persuasive piece arguing why swimming with school is important. Students focused on learning to swim bringing happiness and keeping ourselves healthy and safe. We have been impressed with students’ attitudes towards writing and can’t wait to see the next writing piece our amazing students produce. Well done Grade 2!
Numeracy
In Numeracy we have been exploring Challenging Maths Tasks which encompass 5 minutes of sweaty brain time where our students are able to begin to work through an open-ended independently before we spotlight different strategies used to explicitly teach our topic. Students have shown great resilience and have been working hard to use our many problem-solving strategies. We have been focusing on Place Value.

Dear Grade 4 families and friends,
We hope this newsletter finds you well as we eagerly step into week 6, we're thrilled to bring you another update. This week is an exciting week with house athletics as well as lots of great learning and growing along the way.
In Numeracy, students have been working very hard to understand place value and the operations of mathematics, so far we have covered addition and we are working towards subtraction later in the week. Lots of students are showing great interest in their Numeracy in Grade 4 and it has been amazing to see students adapt to a new set of challenges; displaying a growth mindset and using our problem solving strategies. We have been having some fantastic classroom discussions and celebrating our mistakes as opportunities to learn.
We have had our detective hats on in Reading and have made some informed predictions, last week we sought out the assistance of the students to solve a heinous crime – an apparent Mars Bar theft from the staff room fridge. Mr Columbro would like to share his warmest thanks for all of those who devoted their time to finding his cherished treat. This week we have started to explore folklore and fairy tales and pulling them apart to discuss the moral of the stories and linking them to our own lives.
Writing has allowed the students to spend time crafting wonderful stories about a candyland, they have been putting to practise their handwriting, sentence-forming, punctuation and powerful writing skills. Students have been using some remarkable metaphors and similes to create figurative language masterpieces. Students are also beginning to work on some powerful persuasive writing to produce demanding expositions about sugar.
We are looking forward to seeing all of the amazing things that are still to come this term as we surpass the mid-way point. Good luck to all students participating in athletics and we hope that everyone has a fantastic long weekend.
As always, thanks for your support on your child’s learning journey, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions, concerns or queries.

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)
Dear PLC5 Parents, Guardians, and Carers,
Over the past fortnight, our focus has been on gearing up for some exciting events. We've recently enjoyed the spectacular experience of Sovereign Hill, and now our attention is on the Grade 5 swimming Water Safety sessions scheduled for Tuesday, 12th, and Wednesday, 13th, along with the upcoming Naplan preparations.
In our reading sessions, we've focused on enhancing our skills in summarising information from texts and tracking the important details and events using sticky notes. Exploring the author's message and the purpose behind the texts has also been a developing aspect of our learning.
In writing, our exploration of 'fire' has evolved into crafting persuasive pieces. Students are actively incorporating rich vocabulary and model verbs to enhance the quality of their pieces.
In the numeracy, our students have remarkably employed problem-solving strategies to tackle challenging tasks. Their persistence and determination are evident as they have showcased their ability to find the most efficient strategies for solving complex problems.
This week, our Grade 5 students had a remarkable experience at the Sovereign Hill Costume School. Dressed in immaculate costumes, they delved into the 1850s, exploring classes like Ballarat Benevolent Asylum Ragged School, St Alipius Diggings School, and Wesleyan Day School. Engaging in activities from chalkboard writing to candle making, gold panning and sewing, the two days unfolded as a hands-on journey into the past. The role-playing allowed our students to truly grasp both the joys and challenges of the 1850s schooling.
Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)
Dear Grade 6 families and friends,
As you know we've just returned from an exciting camp in Melbourne, where we had the opportunity to explore and learn about the city. The teachers who attended, as well as others from outside of the Delacombe PS community have all commented on how well the camp went. A huge thank you goes to all students who attended camp for how well they represented the DPS values. You know the song, “I’ve been everywhere man…” – well we went from the MCG to the Shrine of Remembrance to the Queen Victoria Market. We went from Federation Square to the Museum to ACMI. We went from CYC Camp to Museum to IMAX Theatre. WE”VE BEEN EVERYWHERE!
Enjoy our photos 😊
