FOUNDATION

Hooray! We have reached 10 days of Foundation at St Fidelis. We are so proud of how our new students have settled into school life and are beginning to enter the learning spaces for the morning routine independently.

On Tuesday, we acknowledged Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes with our Buddy’s! We were so excited to engage in this fun and rich learning experience. These hands-on activities are a great way for us to learn authentically and apply our knowledge to experiences we enjoy. As mathematicians, Mrs Monaghan helped us with estimating how many cups of flour or spoons of sugar we needed in our mixture. We then enjoyed eating the yummy, delicious pancakes altogether!

As readers and writers, we have been learning about different letters and the sounds that they make. So far we have learnt about the letters S and A and have been practising how to write these. As thinkers, we have also been drawing detailed pictures about our weekends. As thinkers, we had a go at recording initial sounds and a full stop.

As members of a Faith Community, we have created a prayer cloth that will be used each morning and afternoon during whole class prayer. As thinkers, we have begun to unpack what prayer looks like and sounds like, and how to make the Sign of the Cross. This week, we also engaged in a paraliturgy for Ash Wednesday (on Thursday), where we received the cross on our foreheads. We discovered that Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.

A friendly reminder that the green folders are used as our main source of communication for home learning or notes being sent home for students. Please check your child’s folder each night and place it back into their school bag to be returned in the morning. In Week 5, we will begin taking home levelled texts each day, which will go home in the green folders. We kindly ask that you ensure you have a folder by then if you don’t already have one. If you are having trouble purchasing a green folder, please let your child’s teacher know and we can assist with this.

Have a wonderful week!

YEAR 1/2

It has been a very busy week of learning in the Year 1/2 cohort! As inquirers we have continued to explore our big question, ‘How can we build a strong learning community?’.

We began the week by developing the understanding, ‘We can use our strengths to contribute to our learning community.’ Together with our peers we had the opportunity to listen to the wonderful story, What We’ll Build, written by Oliver Jeffers. We discussed the importance of celebrating our differences and doing our fair share to be a part of a learning community. As a thinker we took part in a Signature Strength survey and identified a personal strength that we can use when at school.

As a catholic learning community, we participated in the Ash Wednesday mass by attending the whole school mass. We listened and responded to the prayers. We also received the ashes on our forehead. As thinkers, we engaged in class discussions about Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of the holy season, Lent. We will continue to find out about this special time that leads us into Easter.

Last week we also had the opportunity to actively participate in a fun and exciting shared learning experience, Stop, Look, Listen, Think. As inquirers we made new discoveries about how to stay safe when around the roads. We learnt to use the following steps before crossing the road safely.

Stop: Stop at the edge of the crossing, then take one big step back.

Look: Look in all directions for traffic.

Listen: Listen for the sounds of vehicles.

Think: Think about if it is safe.

It was lovely to meet parents and carers last week! A great opportunity to develop a positive partnership in supporting the wonderful children in Year 1/2!

YEAR 3/4

As curious thinkers, we engaged in a Road Safety incursion, hosted by Jenni from ‘Stop Look Listen Think’. Our insightful host showed us how to cross the road safely, how to correctly wear a helmet, how to correctly wear a seatbelt in the car and what the colours of traffic lights mean. We also learnt the importance of wearing bright coloured clothing when riding our bikes, scooters, roller skates and skateboards so people driving can see us clearly. Thank you Jenni for visiting our school!

As members of a faith community, we engaged in making pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is one day before Ash Wednesday, where Jesus indulged in a feast before he fasted for 40 days. Thank you Mrs Monaghan for making delicious pancakes with us!

On Ash Wednesday, we gathered as a school community to attend Mass to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Father Linh marked crosses on our foreheads with ashes from the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday. We celebrate Ash Wednesday as it reminds us of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Thank you parents and carers for your time on Wednesday night for our Parent Meet and Greet. It was lovely meeting you all and we are looking forward to a positive year of learning ahead for your children.

Assembly

This week, 3/4BP will be hosting our whole school prayer and assembly. Please join us from 8:50am in the hall.

YEAR 5/6

Wow, time is flying by! Camp here we come! We are looking forward to heading to Sovereign Hill Camp on Tuesday, hopefully some of us will come back with some gold!

Last week marked the beginning of Lent, a time of  Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Over the past week we have had many key events in Lent including, Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

On Shrove Tuesday, we engaged in making pancakes with our Buddies. We used our mathematical skills to help measure cups and teaspoons when making the batter and then helped mix the batter to make sure we had no lumps!

Please check out the Foundation page to see some wonderful photos!

As a way of sharing our strengths within our learning space, we engaged in creating a Year 5/6 Human Library. This is where we documented a strength of ours that we are able to teach others in our learning community. We hope you enjoyed viewing these when you attended your Parent Teacher Child Chat.

In The Resilience Project, we introduced gratitude, this is where we identified things we are grateful for at school and at home. During this lesson we had the opportunity to listen to Martin front the resilience talk about Gratitude.

As a way of expressing ourselves and setting up a learning environment personalised to us, we engaged in creating identity art. This is where we drew a self-portrait of ourselves and when you lift the tab open we have drawn all of our favourite things and interests (we think Mr Frazetto will be super proud of our art skills!).

A big congratulations to our Softball, Basketball and Bat Tennis teams, you showed amazing sportsmanship and flexibility on our first interschool sport game of the year. We are very proud of you and look forward to the next games.

We are so looking forward to having a wonderful time at camp!

Have a wonderful week!
