Our Next Fortnight of Learning
Literacy
We will continue exploring the mentor text, 'My Amazing Animal Alphabet Alliteration' book by Rachael Robertson. After building an understanding of how authors engage their readers through the use of figurative language and poetic devices (alliteration, rhyme, repetition), parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) and ways they convey or paint a picture in the reader's mind, the students will now be tasked with the challenge of creating their own alliterations to contribute to a classroom picture book. We will be asking students to select their own favourite animal so discussing this with your child will support the classroom learning.
In phonics, we will be revising Stage 7.2 including al-a, ar, ir-er-ur, oa, or-aw, air and er suffix. We will then launch into Stage 7.3 which we will outline in the next newsletter. The 'Chitter Chatter Chant' is something students will continue to do to revise their grapheme/phoneme knowledge. We have included a picture below and would love for your child to practise this at home.
Numeracy
After an amazing few weeks exploring patterns in the world around us, we are now moving on to investigating place value with a focus on three-digit numbers. We will continue looking at skip counting patterns from any given number, as well as building our knowledge of the Hundreds, Tens and Ones. Students will also investigate collecting data and graphing. We have been amazed by the wonderful, junior mathematicians in the classroom during our Problem-Solving lessons. Their wonderful creative thinking and persistence has astounded us...we cannot wait to see their thinking develop throughout the year.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we will continue exploring our Term 1 Topic: Growing Older & Wiser. This topic explores the concept of identity and encourages students to take responsible risks and monitor their own thinking (known as metacognition).
Wellbeing
Our Morning Circle routines have become a crowd favourite in the Grade 2 classrooms. These run from 8.55am which allows students the time to arrive at school and settle into the classroom. Our next step is to develop our 'Ready to Learn' scales which will support students in checking in with themselves on a three-point scale (1. Not okay to Learn 2. Okay to Learn 3. Ready to Learn). These will be displayed on each student's table, and they will be supported to mark where they are sitting. This is what they will look like (but coloured to look MUCH prettier)...
Check out our Acknowledgements of Country
At the beginning of the year, students worked together to develop an Acknowledgement of Country. These are displayed in the classroom and incorporated into our Morning Circles. See below for our classroom displays!
