Connect: Year 1

Hello families. It was wonderful to see a great turn out at our meet the teacher and Twilight sports night. We hope that those that were able to make it had a good time, we know we did! By now, your children should be well into school routine and understand the expectations of behaviour at school. We are seeing some wonderful habits starting to form that help create a positive environment in our classroom. We appreciate your support with this at home.

Classroom helpers- Yes!! We are happy to say that we can invite volunteers back into our classrooms. There will be a mandatory information session that will be held on Tuesday 19th March from 9.00-10.00am which will be held in the library. All helpers require a valid working with children’s check. Please register your attendance via the information sheet sent home.

What we are learning in Grade 1

Literacy

Students have been learning to say, read and write the phoneme ‘--y’ as in ‘unhappy Molly’. We have been discussing and brainstorming Homophones, ask your children what were some of the words we came up with. Next week our phoneme focus will be 'igh' an in 'ie' and '-y'. We will also be working on sentence structure while exploring our mentor text Wombat.

Numeracy

During maths students have been practicing counting on from different starting points. We have also been exploring addition using our part part whole strategy. Next week students will continue to learn different addition strategies such as using tens frames. Subtraction strategies, such as count backwards, part part whole, using number lines and 100’s charts, will also begin to be introduced.

 Wellbeing

Term one has the wellbeing focus of Emotional Literacy. Students have been developing their ability to recognising and identifying their own and others emotions. Students are continuing to earn Dojo points for displaying the Skye Primary School values relating to Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationship.

Inquiry

Term One sees Grade 1 exploring the Inquiry topic Celebrating Differences. Students have enjoyed discussing their place in the community. Towards the end of the term students will be exploring a range of countries being introduced to different games, holidays and traditions from each.
