National Walk Safely to School Day for 2026 took place on Friday, 22 May. The annual initiative encourages primary school students and their families to build healthy, active habits by walking and commuting safely to school.

While the official date has passed, the core safety rules and community initiatives promoted during the event serve as year-round best practices for school commutes.

 

  • Hold hands: Children under the age of 10 must always hold the hand of an adult or carer when crossing the road.
  • Stop, Look, Listen, Think: Teach children to stop before the kerb, look right, left, and right again, listen for oncoming traffic, and think before crossing.
  • Park and Walk: If you live too far to walk from home, park the car a few blocks away and walk the rest of the journey to avoid school zone traffic congestion.
