Message from the Principal

This week marks the conclusion of National Reconciliation Week and a range of meaningful activities that have supported our understanding of, and commitment to, the cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations peoples.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Kellie Baumgart for her leadership throughout the fortnight and for empowering our First Nations students to have a strong voice in the design and organisation of the various activities and experiences. The opportunity for students to lead and shape these important conversations reflects our commitment to belonging, respect, and authentic student agency. Thank you to our First Nations teacher aide Layla for assisting our students with these programs.

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of joining several of our student leaders for lunch with the Hon. Di Farmer at Parliament House. The students represented Balmoral exceptionally well as they reflected on their leadership journeys, the legacy they hope to leave for future students, and their biggest learnings from serving their school community. What stood out most was the thoughtfulness and maturity of their reflections. The leaders spoke about the importance of service, contribution, and creating opportunities for others to thrive. It was another reminder of the remarkable young people we have at Balmoral and the positive impact they continue to have on our school culture.

As we move toward the final weeks of Term 2, I would like to remind families that attendance remains a fundamental expectation for all students. Every day at school matters. Attendance is critical not only for academic progress but also for maintaining connections with teachers, peers, and the broader school community, particularly as students prepare for upcoming assessment and reporting periods.

To support high-quality assessment and reporting processes, and due to staff leave impacting some subject areas, the school has made the decision to extend Semester 1 reporting timelines. As a result, student academic reports will be distributed shortly after students return for Term 3.

This additional time will ensure that assessment, moderation, and reporting processes can be completed thoroughly and accurately, particularly within Junior Secondary. We appreciate the understanding and support of our families as we prioritise the quality and integrity of reporting for all students.

Finally, this serves as an important reminder for Year 10 families regarding Work Experience during Week 10 of this term. As a school, we have a strong expectation that all Year 10 students engage in Work Experience as a valuable learning opportunity that connects classroom learning with future career pathways, workplace skills, and senior schooling decisions. These experiences often provide students with important insights into their strengths, interests, and aspirations beyond school.

Parents and carers requiring additional support in securing a placement are encouraged to contact Leanne McFie or Tracey Sof as soon as possible so that we can work together to maximise this opportunity for every Year 10 student.

Thank you to our staff, students, and families for your continued support as we approach the conclusion of another successful term. The strength of our community continues to be reflected in the way we learn together, support one another, and create opportunities for every learner to thrive.
