YEAR 1

FROM THE CLASSROOM

It has been a cold but fun week of learning in Year 1! Students have been engaged and have shown a “can do” mindset in the classroom. Students have also loved our Inquiry unit, 'The Secret Life of Plants'. We have done so many fun hands-on activities!

In Wellbeing, we learnt about the different types of problems we may face daily and how we can overcome them. A strategy we learnt is the 'Six Sides of Breathing' toolkit, which we can use to calm ourselves after a stressful situation. We also learnt the tool of 'Mindshift', where we can think of something else to promote safe self-regulation practices.

In Inquiry, students have been learning about the life cycle of a plant and what a plant needs to grow. We started growing alfalfa seeds in our classrooms this week! Students cannot wait to see them grow in our classrooms and turn into alfalfa sprouts!

In Reading, students practised identifying interesting words in a chosen mentor text and learnt how to find the main idea of a story. This supported them in retelling the story in their own words.

In Writing, students have learnt our new Persuasive Talk for Writing text quite well. They have also learnt the actions that help them memorise and retell the text. Students have begun to learn our new toolkits for 'making an explicit point with a short sentence' and using conjunctions.

During Phonics, students began to revise, practise and apply their knowledge of the previously learnt sounds in 7.2. Students explored these sounds through reading and writing tasks.

In Mathematics, students are continuing their learning in multiplication and division. We have been exploring correct language such as equal and groups. Lots of fun activities have helped our students learn the concept of equal sharing.
