Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Virgil’s,

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week 2026 is observed from 27 May to 3 June and is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to consider the role each of us plays in reconciliation. These dates mark two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey — the 1967 referendum and the High Court’s Mabo decision. This year’s theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day and reminds us that meaningful change requires collective action.

St Virgil’s College remains deeply committed to reconciliation, as reflected in the College’s Strategic Directions and ongoing work through our Reconciliation Action Plan. Across both Junior and Senior campuses, students have engaged in a range of learning experiences this week that encourage reflection, respect and a deeper understanding of First Nations histories, cultures and perspectives.

A Season to Celebrate in College Rowing

The College Rowing Awards Evening was held on Monday,25 May at the Newtown Rowing Sheds, providing a fitting opportunity to celebrate a season of outstanding achievement. While the results have been impressive, what stands out most is the way this group of rowers has represented the College — with commitment, humility and a genuine sense of team. We are especially proud of our Senior rowers, whose leadership has helped establish a supportive and encouraging culture that has shaped the experience of every boy in the squad.

Among the season highlights were Hamish Godfrey and Finn McManamey becoming National Champions in the Men’s U-17 Double Scull, while College crews reached six A Finals at the 2026 National Championships. The College also claimed its sixth consecutive Head of the River Junior Shield and its second consecutive All Schools Aggregate Shield, with the Year 10 VIII achieving the rare double of winning both the Year 10 Head of the River and the All Schools VIII. We also congratulate Alex Lamprey on his invitation to the Australian U-19 trials, a fine recognition of his talent and dedication.

As a College community, we are incredibly proud of this group of rowers and all they have achieved together. Just as importantly, we are proud of the culture they have built — one marked by leadership, service, encouragement and pride in representing the College.

We thank our coaches, parent volunteers, age group managers, families and supporters for the many ways they sustain the program, and we offer a very special thank you to Oliver Wilson-Haffenden, Director of Rowing, and Susan Weeding, Boat House Manager for their outstanding generosity, care and service to the rowing community throughout the season.

Main Road – Planned Works

Last year, we advised families that Glenorchy City Council was planning road works on the section of Main Road in front of the College at our Austins Ferry campus. This week, a representative from Roadways, the contractor engaged by Council to complete the project, visited the College and confirmed that work is expected to begin after the King’s Birthday public holiday, Tuesday, 9 June. The project includes extending the bike lane on both sides of Main Road. While every effort will be made to maintain traffic flow and minimise disruption during peak school times, some delays are expected.

Student Free Day – Friday June 5

Next week, on Friday June 5, the Junior School and Senior School staff of St Virgil’s College, will undertake a range of professional learning activities including moderation for our Senior School teachers. This is done with all TASC teachers from across the state to ensure consistency in teacher judgments. As such, this will be a student free day with no classes held at either campus.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Jon Franzin
