Celebrating NAIDOC

Sally Goss

Assistant Principal

On Friday 25th July, we had the honour of participating in a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country, led by a local Aboriginal Elder Colin Junior Junior

This powerful and moving experience reminded us of the deep cultural significance and traditions of the First Nations people whose land we live, learn, and work on every day.

The Welcome to Country was a respectful and heartfelt acknowledgment of Country, offering us a chance to reflect on the enduring connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with this land.

The Smoking Ceremony, rich with symbolism, was both cleansing and unifying. As the smoke gently drifted across the school grounds, it carried with it messages of protection, healing, and a spiritual connection to Country. Students and staff stood quietly and respectfully, taking in the meaning behind this ancient tradition and the privilege of being part of it.

We are grateful to Colin Junior Junior who generously shared his time, wisdom, and culture with us. Experiences like these are vital in our journey towards reconciliation, understanding, and respect. They deepen our awareness and appreciation of Australia’s First Nations history and foster a more inclusive and connected community.

This event was our first opportunity to celebrate NAIDOC Week (which had occurred over the school holiday break) with this year marking the 50th anniversary of the festival.  NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders day Observance Committee: this was the name of the committee that was originally responsible for organising the national NAIDOC Week activities. Over time the acronym has become the name for the entire festival.

It was an opportunity for our community to recognise and honour the histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to acknowledge that the land we live and learn on was never ceded.

A huge number of students participated and the feedback was great. On behalf of the student community, we thank Ms Goss for coordinating the event.
