Explicit Instruction - What is it? What does teaching look like in a SKiPPS classroom?
Parent Information Evening – Understanding Our Teaching Approach
Wednesday 27th August | 6:00–7:00pm | School Library
You will no doubt be aware that there have been some fairly significant changes to the way that we teach at SKiPPS over the last 12 months.
We warmly invite all parents and carers to an upcoming information evening to provide more information about these changes and provide some detail about our approach to teaching and learning at St Kilda Park Primary School.
This session will provide a brief introduction to Explicit Instruction and what we mean when we refer to the Science of Learning. You’ll also get a closer look at what our classroom practice looks like in action, including:
- A PhOrMeS (phonics) lesson
- A Writing lesson
- A Maths lesson
Whether you're new to the school or just curious about our evidence-based approach to teaching and learning, we’d love to see you there!
Please register your interest using this link so we can be prepared with resources for all attending.
If you have any questions about this session, please see Jac or send me an email at jacqueline.morphy@education.vic.gov.au
Foundation: 100 Days of School Celebration!
Yesterday marked a very special milestone for our Foundation students – their 100th day of school! This is a huge achievement and an important moment in the school year, as it celebrates all the learning, growing, and fun that has taken place since the first day of school back in January.
To mark the occasion, students (and staff!) got into the spirit of the “100” theme in some very creative ways. Some arrived dressed as 100-year-olds, complete with glasses, grey hair and walking sticks, while others wore outfits decorated with 100 items – from stickers and buttons to pom poms and patches.
The school was buzzing with excitement!
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of 100-themed activities – from counting collections of 100 to creating special artwork and completing fun challenges. It was a joyful day filled with laughter, learning, and lots of celebration.
Congratulations to our Foundation students for reaching this fantastic milestone – and thank you to our teachers and families for supporting them on their journey so far.
Canterbury Road Pedestrian Crossing
We’d like to remind all families to take extra care when travelling to and from school, particularly those families living in St Kilda West who use the pedestrian crossing on Canterbury Road.
Back in 2022, our School Council successfully lobbied for safety upgrades on the crossing leading to the underpass at the rear of the school. Whilst this was successful in securing an extension of the crossing time (green man), dynamic pedestrian detectors and the addition of visibility aids including decals, signage and zig zag line marking, it has not completely removed the risk. Too many cars travel along the road (which has a speed limit of 60 km/h) during morning rush hour and simply don't notice the crossing.
Just last week, it has been reported to us there were a couple of concerning incidents where cars failed to stop at the red light, resulting in some very close calls involving our community.
While we continue to work with local authorities to improve safety, we are urging all parents and carers to speak with their children about staying alert and cautious when crossing roads - even at pedestrian crossings. Encourage them to stop, look, listen and think before stepping out, and never assume a vehicle will stop.
Together, let’s do everything we can to keep our students safe.
Help Us Advocate for a Better Bus Service for Our Community
At SKiPPS, we know how important reliable public transport is — not only for our families and students, but for the broader community we are part of.
That’s why we’re supporting a local push to improve Bus Route 606, a vital link that connects Elsternwick to Port Melbourne, travelling through key areas including St Kilda, Elwood, and Middle Park (and stopping at the front of our school).
Unfortunately, the current service is falling short — particularly for school children and older residents who rely on it the most. Overcrowding, infrequent services, and buses that don’t arrive on time — or at all — have left many commuters stranded, including students travelling to and from school.
Many SKiPPS students rely on this route after they graduate, using the 606 to get to Albert Park College or Elwood College. For these students, a reliable and frequent bus service isn't a luxury — it’s a necessity.
Local community advocate Jenni has started a petition calling for improved service frequency to ensure safer, more reliable travel for all. We encourage SKiPPS families and community members to show their support by signing the petition here:
Let’s work together to ensure that our current and former students — along with all members of our community — can rely on public transport that is safe, consistent, and meets the needs of the people it serves.
Bookings are now open for Robotics, Chess & Electronics classes!
