What's Happening At Milgate!

Acknowledgement of Country

Milgate Primary School would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the Wurundjeri People, and we would like to pay our respects to the elders both past and present. Staff, students and the school community understand that we thrive, learn and live on Wurundjeri Country and we stand with all cultures united as one.

Milgate’s Vision

To provide a dynamic, inclusive learning environment that challenges students to become inquirers, thinkers and caring young people who are able to interact in the global society with respect and intercultural understanding

Welcome back to Term 4 to all students, parents and staff. We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday either in Melbourne or beyond. The students are looking rested and refreshed and ready for interesting and challenging learning during their last term of the year.

From this term onwards, our school newsletter will be published fortnightly instead of weekly. This change will allow us to share more meaningful updates, highlights, and upcoming events in each edition while reducing the number of emails sent to families.

We appreciate your continued engagement and encourage you to keep an eye out for our next issue in two weeks’ time!

YEAR 5 INCURSION - SMOOTHIE BAR

On Thursday the Year 5s participated in a whole day incursion, run by Mini Boss. The Smoothie Bar experience stepped the students through the different stages of the Marketing Process. In this incursion, students were challenged to create a smoothie product and marketing campaign that promoted health and wellness within their community. Working in teams, students partook in market research, design and costs for their smoothies. They researched nutritional benefits, then blended and tested their smoothies.

Using creativity, students developed marketing materials to promote and sell their product. Then it came down to The Pitch – which team best presented their research, findings, results and marketing to a panel of sharks (teacher judges)

YEAR 5 EXCURSION - CODING CHALLENGE

On Thursday, selected Year 5 students went to Caulfield Grammar School to take part in a State-wide Coding Challenge, where they formed teams to compete against groups from other schools in an engaging face-to-face coding event. The students participated in numerous challenges and games, ensuring a day filled with excitement and friendly rivalry. Special thank you to the parents who attended the event with their children and to Lia Vaughan for organising the excursion.

FOUNDATION EXCURSION - MYUNA FARM

On Thursday, the Foundation students visited Myuna Farm as part of their inquiry into ‘Sharing the Planet.’ The students learned about farm animals, met and patted some baby animals and reptiles, and even had the chance to milk a goat! They discovered how wheat is turned into flour and enjoyed having a go at grinding wheat themselves. Students also explored how we care for and use plants, planting a seed to take home and grow. It was a fun-filled day where students shared and developed their knowledge, showed curiosity as inquirers by asking thoughtful questions, and demonstrated care and responsibility for our Earth. We would like to thank our wonderful parent helpers for their support on the day, and the Foundation students for being open-minded and risk-takers throughout the excursion!

YEAR 6 EXCURSION - IMMIGRATION MUSEUM

On Tuesday, the Year 6 students went to Melbourne's CBD to learn about migration as part of their Where we are in place and time unit of inquiry. Strolling by the Yarra River and over the Sandridge Bridge, students investigated the waves of migration that have impacted Victoria in particular on the glass panels. Then through the Immigration Museum, we explored the perspectives of what individuals experienced and the push or pull factors for migrating to Australia.

YEAR 4 INCURSION - JUSTIN CALVERY

On Monday, Justin Calvery, or ‘Digga’ as he is affectionately known, visited Milgate to talk to the Year 4s. He is a passionate gardener, a weekly guest on 3RRR 'Breakfasters' radio show and a published author. He shared his knowledge about the importance of ecosystems, how to recognise a plant’s adaptation to its ecosystem and the important role that decomposers play in maintaining healthy soils and the circle of life. He took each class on a walk around the school to explore Milgate’s current flora and fauna and sparked a curiosity and interest in students to increase the biodiversity at Milgate. We greatly appreciate Digga giving up his time to share his enthusiasm for the natural world with our students.

YEAR 1 EXCURSION- MELBOURNE ZOO

On Wednesday, our Year 1 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Melbourne Zoo to explore animal habitats and discover how human actions can impact the environment. Throughout the day, students strengthened their research and inquiry skills by listening to zoo keepers share fascinating facts about the animals in their care and by making detailed observations of different species and their habitats. Using their directional language skills, they confidently navigated their way around the zoo with maps in hand. Blessed with beautiful sunshine, it was a day filled with curiosity, learning, and fun. What a wonderful way to bring our inquiry unit to life!
