KITCHEN AND GARDEN PROGRAM FOR 2025!

Kitchen

Kicking off our second round in the kitchen we have seen the Year 5's back in the swing of it and the Year 3's dazzling us with their enthusiasm and careful application of new skills.  We had some beautiful produce harvested from the garden this week to inspire our menu; pumpkin, silverbeet, celery, lettuce, parsley, carrots and lemons.  The pumpkin scones were definitely a surprise hit and would make a great lunchbox inclusion, so feel free to encourage the students get baking over the weekend!  In fact we had clean serving plates at the end of our classes this week so all 5 recipes were a hit!  It's a great reminder of how being involved in the process, and sharing a meal in a no pressure, peer group environment can really encourage the students to try something they may otherwise avoid!

As always, we would love to see you in the kitchen helping with classes.  You don't need to be an experienced cook but an extra pair of hands and eyes can really help out, and it's great fun to see the kids in action.  There is no need to let us know you're coming, please just sign in at the office and ensure you have completed your volunteer requirements with Vicki.

Garden

We have been super lucky with the weather the last couple of weeks! This has allowed us to get out and get heaps done in the garden. Sadly we have not had much rain so that is making things a little slow growing. We have been busy watering, weeding, maintaining beds, planting seeds and seedlings.  Our fabulous volunteer Warren, popped in over the weekend and did some paving up the shed. It looks great and makes access into the shed so much safer!

The year 3s are busy learning about what tool is best for the job and how to identify weeds.

This fortnight the year 5s are being handed over their plot from the year 6 garden crew.

Fingers crossed for rain!

Thanks to The Gordon Cert III Horticulture students for coming in on Monday to practice their pruning skills on our fruit trees. Their hard work has helped us immensly and the garden is looking fantastic.

Sustainability Update

Dont forget about our recycle station that is located in the foyer at the back doors of the main building. You can bring along your plastic bread tags, milk carton lids (must be clean and dry), dental pruducts (tooth brush, toothpaste tubes), EMPTY blister packs (all medications removed), stationary (pens, textas, glue sticks, white out tubes), batteries (take to kitchen of tues, wed or thursdays only).

Recycle Highlight

Bread Tags-plastic ones only

Bread tag plastic can be recycled however they can not go in your curbside recycle bin as they are too small for the sorting machinery. We are collecting plastic bread tags (no paper tags please - these can go in your compost bin) or drop off to the Food Scrap Friday crew).

The tags are turned into bowls, platters etc. All of the proceeds from the sales go towards funding the purchase of wheelchairs for people in Africa. Check out

https://ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au/ for more info.

You can also drop your plastic bread tags off at these local collection points:

  • Urban Upcycle in Geelong
  • Bakers Delight in Geelong West
  • Surf Coast Hearing Clinic in Torquay
  • Bakers Delight in Belmont

Thanks
