Monash Experience - 23rd November

A small group of Year 10 and Year 11 students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Monash Peninsula Experience Day.

The Experience Day was a great chance to attend workshops where students could go through activities in a University class setting. The students had a tour of the campus ground and enjoyed morning tea and lunch on campus.

Year 8 Coastal Walk - 30th November

Our coastal adventure started bright and early on a Thursday morning. We started by meeting up with our Year Eight homerooms in the Kennedy Hall to go over the plans one last time, to get into our groups, and from there we all headed out and filled up the buses.

Once we arrived, we all took photos and set off on our 8km journey. On our walk, we saw many beautiful features of nature and hiked up and down many bushes. While we were walking on our paths there were several occasions where we were attacked by many flies that clung to our skin, we saw several insects crawling around in the bushes and although it was tiresome and windy, being able to immerse ourselves in nature was rewarding.

It also was really nice being able to listen to the sounds of the waves crashing and listening to the wind. Halfway through our walk, our shoulders, legs and feet began to ache and we started to struggle our way through the walk. We eventually made it to Black Rock Beach, where we ended our day at the park, hanging out with our friends and resting our very sore feet.

The day ended and we all headed back to our buses. My bus was living the life we were doing karaoke and singing random Christmas songs. It was a great way to end our day and was a great experience.

This was a really nice way to reflect on nature, get a chance to take in the fresh air and a change from being in our classrooms. The coastal walk was a wonderful experience and a great way to end the year.

Here are some quotes from the students and their experiences.

"Shared Stories is such a unique and collaborative experience. I very much enjoyed contributing to this tapestry of writing and art in this year's anthology.  It preserves our thoughts and aspirations for the future and this will live on forever.  It is something I will cherish forever."  Rhea

"It means a lot to me that my artwork is published in Shared Stories! It's thrilling and almost unbelievable as this program is connected to many different schools with many talented students, and yet I was able to achieve a position". Lily

"Being able to contribute to such an amazing opportunity simply feels unreal. Shared stories not only inspired my creative endeavours but will let them live on in history, which means the world to me." Ariel

"To be published in the 2023 Shared Stories Anthology, I felt that I’d somewhat succeeded in being an artist. My messages were understood and appreciated, and I felt recognised. I appreciate both the opportunity to spread awareness on my selected issue, as well as the direct acknowledgement of my abilities that I'd spent my entire life fostering". Steph H

"It was an invaluable learning opportunity which allowed me to apply my knowledge of writing and refining poetry.  I am extremely grateful my piece got published. Not only was it a great experience but reflected my growth and achievements as a writer." Krisha

"To me, the fact that I was able to be published in Shared Stories Anthology, means that my work is at least, at a publishable standard. This gives me motivation to work on larger projects that especially relate to writing." Pisey

VCE Vocational Major - 1st December

Recently, our VCE VM students from Years 11 and 12 completed TLIF0078 (Recognise Motor Vehicle Crash Risks and Post Crash Actions) with Intelligent Training Solutions.

Our students had to demonstrate that they understood what to do if a crash happened such as checking the vehicle's occupants, providing first aid and making the area safe.

Student reflection:

"The recognised Motor Vehicle Crash Risks is one of my favourite VM incursions of this year as I learnt a lot about the dangers of crashes while driving on the road and tips on how to drive safely with extra care." Chelsea T, Year 12

KEM Student Leadership Retreat

This week three of our 2024 Year 12 leaders had the opportunity to attend the KEM student leadership retreat at Salt Saltbush Presentation Family Centre. They had the chance to network with leaders across the 10 Kildare schools and talk about their vision for 2024.

Guest speakers included human rights lawyer, Laura John, and Paul Salmon from The Resilience Project. The speakers worked with the students to develop their leadership skills and prepare them for leading their schools in 2024.

We also got to enjoy some beach volleyball and got up close with the local wildlife.

The future is in good hands with this bunch!

Unit 1 Art - 7th December

Our Unit 1 students were very fortunate to have a drawing session with professional artist Trudi Harley.  It was fascinating to listen to what she is communicating in her work and the symbolism she uses within her super realistic drawings.

This session was a great way for the students to collaborate with a practising artist, build skills in drawing and consider meanings in a range of artworks.

Christmas Carol Tullow Session - 7th December

On the 7th of December, The Arts and Celebration Committee hosted our Christmas Carol Tullow session. This event was held to celebrate the event of Christmas and the birth of baby Jesus.

To bring our school community together for one last time, this event's intention was to showcase the talent held by our fellow peers at various year levels.

Students were given mini candy canes and asked to wear Christmas accessories to have some more fun!

The songs that were performed were “Santa at the Symphony, Do You Hear What I Hear?” by the Concert Band, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Soul Collective and “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by The Dramatics. Along with the individual performers’ pieces.

We would like to thank our performers from Concert Band, Soul Collective, The Dramatics and our individual performers Tahnysha T, Beata O and Jessica L. We would not have this Tullow Session without them stepping up to the set.

A special thanks to Jessica N and Pehara J, our Year 8/9 Leaders, for their support and leadership in 2023.
