Early Years Woodworking Incursion

As part of our Integrated Studies History unit, students in the early years took part in an exciting woodworking incursion. They learned about a traditional Australian invention, the billy cart, and then had the opportunity to make their very own billy cart toy. The billy cart holds a special place in Australian history, as it was originally built by children from spare wood, pram wheels and bits of rope. During the session, students were introduced to the basics of woodworking safety and learned hands-on skills such as how to hammer and remove nails carefully. They were guided step by step through the process of constructing their miniature billy carts, developing their fine motor skills, patience, and confidence. It was a wonderful way to connect history with hands-on creativity, bringing to life an iconic part of Australian childhood.
