Exploring Pathways Beyond Year 12: A Future Full of Possibilities

As our Year 12 students approach the final weeks of their schooling journey, it’s timely to reflect on the many pathways available to them beyond graduation. Whether heading into further study, training, employment, or taking time to explore their options, the transition from school to adulthood is a significant milestone—and one filled with opportunity.

Research consistently shows that most Australian school leavers successfully transition into further education or employment. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2024, 81% of young people aged 15–24 were fully engaged in work, study, or both. This reflects the broad range of options available and the resilience of our youth in navigating their futures.

University remains a popular choice, with two-thirds of Year 12 graduates intending to pursue higher education. For those seeking practical, hands-on learning, TAFE and vocational education and training (VET) offer industry-relevant qualifications and faster entry into the workforce.  Apprenticeships and traineeships are also valuable pathways, particularly in trades and emerging industries where skilled workers are in high demand.

Importantly, not all students follow a linear path. The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) reveal that young people experience diverse transitions, often combining study, work, and periods of exploration. Some may take a gap year to travel, volunteer, or gain life experience before committing to a long-term direction. Others may enter the workforce directly, gaining valuable skills and independence.

At St Stephen’s, we encourage students to consider their strengths, interests, and aspirations when planning their next steps. Our career education programs, work experience opportunities, and partnerships with local employers and training providers aim to support informed decision-making and smooth transitions.

It’s also vital to acknowledge that some students may face challenges along the way. Socioeconomic factors, geographic location, and access to resources can influence outcomes. That’s why we remain committed to providing tailored support and guidance to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.

To our Year 12 cohort: your future is not defined by a single choice, but by your willingness to explore, learn, and grow. Whether you choose university, TAFE, work, or a combination of paths, know that success comes in many forms—and we’re proud to walk alongside you as you take your next steps.

Regards,
