Year 9 News

Dear Year 9 Families,
Welcome back to Term 4! It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final stretch of the school year. This term will be a busy but exciting term filled with celebrations and assessments!
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
As previous terms, we will be continuing the use of Kurnai Positive Acknowledgements (KPA’s), it has been fantastic to see students working hard and showing determination to display all of Kurnai’s four pillars. Keep up the great work!

Community Innovators Program
At the end of last term, 20 of our Year 9 students took part in the Community Innovators Program at Federation University, an exciting initiative designed to inspire young people to consider university pathways. Throughout the program, students worked with mentors and university staff to tackle real-world challenges and develop creative solutions. It was a great opportunity for students to see how their interests could shape future study and career choices.
“Last term, a number of year 9 students participated in the community innovates program. It was a program, which provided insights for future careers, lead by entrepreneurs. On the day, we were able to use critical thinking for our projects. Our projects we made were issues around the community and creative ways we could solve them. It was a fun and eye-opening experience, and we were all very grateful to be there.” – S.J
Outdoor Education
Bush Walk at the Traralgon Railway:At the end of last term, our Outdoor Education classes headed out on a bushwalk along the Traralgon Railway Reserve Trail. This excursion gave students the chance to explore the local environment. Along the way, they observed native plants and wildlife while having a mix of physical challenge and outdoor learning.
The class had an awesome day connecting with nature and enjoying the fresh air!
Surf Life Saving Skills:This term, our Outdoor Education students are completing their Surf lifesaving skills program. They’re learning vital water safety, rescue, and first aid techniques while building confidence in the water. It’s a hands-on and exciting way to stay active and develop important life skills.
“In the life-saving/swimming classes, we have been learning about skills in preparation for surf camp. We have been tested on how far we can swim, different types of swimming, rescue strategies and how well we can swim in chaotic waters. We spent lots of time learning how to save “unconscious” friends by pulling them to safety. Overall, it has been a fun experience, and I am excited for surf camp.”

Wellington Cricket
In week 1, we had a group of boys attend Wellington Cricket. At this event, students versed a few other teams in a short round robin event. The boys were unsuccessful but displayed our school values proudly.
State Athletics
On Monday, 20th October, Skylah Russell travelled to Albert Park to compete, accompanied by her number-one supporter, Marli Naporowski. Skylah participated in the 15-year-old girls’ Long Jump, achieving an impressive personal best of 4.29 metres and placing 7th overall. Both girls demonstrated outstanding school spirit, enthusiastically cheering on competitors from local schools throughout the day.
SEPEP Wyncity Excursion
In week 2, the SEPEP girls enjoyed an excursion to Wyncity. Students had a fantastic time taking part in bowling and laser tag. It was a fun and active few hours that brought the group together!
“In week 2, we went bowling at Wyncity. I was really impressed when Monica was getting a lot of strikes. It was also fun to have a go at Lazer-tag. Chelsea spent most of the time crashing into Will which was hilarious. I really enjoyed when Hannah tricked everyone into thinking that she was playing, but it was Leah! It was a really fun lesson.” – Paige B
Parent Teacher Conversations
A huge thank you to all year 9 parents and carers who were able to make it to parent teacher conversations last term. If you were unable to make it, feel free to contact someone from the year 9 team asking for feedback.
Expectations
As a cohort, we have been focusing on key expectations for our Year 9 students. The three main areas we are working on are: arriving to class on time, bringing all necessary equipment to class, and wearing the correct uniform.
Over this term, the year 9 students have been struggling to bring all necessary equipment to class.
Just a reminder that students are expected to bring books, pens and a device to class.
If students are struggling to achieve this, you may receive a text message or call home to ask for support.
Thank you for your continued support of our year 9 students. We are proud of everything they have achieved so far this year and look forward to a strong finish!
