ACMI Big Hero 6 Excursion

On Friday the 26th April 2024, Year 7 Students attended ACMI in the city.

Students watched the movie "Big Hero 6" to study the themes, messages and author's intentions as part of their upcoming text response unit in English.

Students also visited 'The Story of the Moving Picture' exhibition. This focuses on how film has changed over time. The students had a great time exploring Federation Square, watching the movie and exploring the exhibition.

Year 8

In Year 8 Term 2 we have been having lots of fun in class and out! This term the sport options for inter-school sports were Netball, Football, Badminton, and Soccer. The try-outs were held for each sport and now the students are training hard ready to represent Brookside.

These are our major focuses for our classes in Term 2. In Math we’re focusing on Geometric Reasoning, we have been learning about different types of triangles, what triangles and quadrilaterals add up to and other things like angle relationship and what the word congruent means/represents. In English we’re focusing on studying the text Two Wolves, we have been learning about different themes and messages in the book and level statements using quotes.

In science we have been learning about cells in plants and animals, we have learned about what the cell parts are called and what makes up a cell. During Humanities we are learning about civics and injustice issues in Australia, we are to choose one injustice and research it, digging deeper into the surface of the issue. In other subjects we have been working on the following, PE- Invasion games, Health – Nutrition, Music – songwriting, Food – sustainability, Digi tech – exploring Microsoft Excel.

We are looking forward to the rest of the term.

Year 9

In week 8 of Term 1, 50 of our year 9 Brooksiders, along with 8 very happy staff members, were lucky enough to attend the Queensland camp for 2024! This consisted of 5 days on the sunshine coast, 2 plane trips, 3 incredible theme parks, way too much food, the most competitive staff vs student games of beach volleyball you’ve ever seen (teachers smashed it!), about a million games of Uno which were just as competitive, endless laughter and memories that will last a lifetime.

On day 1, we set off for the airport with our very sleepy year 9’s, leaving Brookside at 6am! The plane trip was brief but endlessly entertaining, and exciting with some of our students on a plane for the very first time. Arriving in Queensland, we headed for our camp accommodation, and straight in the pool to cool off! Out for dinner the first night, with lots of chatting and endless selfies, our year 9s had some down time and rest before our first big theme park day, to follow.

On our second day in Queensland, we had our first full theme park day at the incredible Wet n Wild. It was fitting that it was the hottest day we had, and it was mostly spent in and out of the water on the crazy rides. Our year 9s will forever have the words “Have you put sunscreen on?” etched into their memories for years to come! Coming back to the campgrounds for some relaxation after a very big day, and out for dinner again, saw the perfect end to a great first day out and about.

Day three was Sea World Day.  Another fun-filled day with lots of rides, shopping, and adorable dolphin and seal shows. We learned about the theme park’s conservation efforts and marvelled at the Sea World animal trainers, as well as our year 9s abilities to eat copious amounts of food and ride the most outrageous rides!

Day four was the day most of our 9s were waiting for… Movie World! Although it was the third big theme park day in a row, our students were more hyped than ever to get to movie world, where they enjoyed the most daredevilish rides – the joker was insane! We got to see the famous Movie World parade, enjoyed all the movie themed attractions, restaurants, and characters roaming around. Our students enjoyed this day to the fullest, arriving at the park as it opened and were the last to leave as it shut its doors. It was clear by day four that the experiences our 9s had, and the incredible memories they were making with us and with one another, were going to travel back to Melbourne with us!

Our fifth and final day on this amazing camp was tinged with a hint of sadness at the fact that we all knew it was coming to an end. We spent the day, relaxing on the campgrounds, sharing all the photos, stories, and memories we had just created! We were able to gratefully reflect on our time together, and the teachers had the chance to be incredibly impressed with the group of young people we had spent the last five days with. The way in which our year 9 Queensland camp crew represented our school and conducted themselves was admirable, to say the least.

We were filled with gratitude and way too many vending machine snacks, as we boarded our plane home. 50 very tired but incredibly happy year 9s were greeted by their families. The teachers are so proud of our campers and will be reminiscing and connecting with our students for days and months to come over our incredible trip to Queensland!
