Celebrating our learning

Foundation

Grade 1

The Grade 1’s have been working their way through sounds for Little Learners Love literacy. Everyday students are becoming more and more confident in saying the sounds and making words with diagraphs. They can even be able to make words using the different sounds of ir, ur and er.

Science

We have had a messy start to science this term with Grade 3 and 4 students asked to bring soil from their own backyard (or grandmas). A big thank you to parents that helped facilitate this!

The grade 3 and 4 students have been busy describing and comparing different types of soils and we were all surprised at how many things were hiding there, sometimes small grubs, pebbles, coins. Not to mention the invisible world. In 1tsp of soil there can be more bacteria (usually good bacteria) than people on the planet.

Meanwhile, Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students have had varied experiences with water – going on a water walk of the school to discover the hire hydrants and water meters, as well as investigating how rain interacts with surfaces differently.

Grade 5 and 6 students have had an opportunity to describe the different scales of damage received by Earthquake’s using the Mercalli scale and sequence and storyboard their effects. One student shared in a discussion that her Dad grew up in Christchurch and at school they had Earthquake preparation and training. Perhaps we will do a drill ourselves…
