Matilda to walk Kokoda Trail
Matilda Sowter knows her family military history, and the enthusiasm and pride in her eyes when she produces her great-grandfather's World War II medals are evident.
Matilda will be joining four other students from the Murray Plains electorate to walk the Kakoda Trail at the end of June this year. It will give her the merest glimpse of what her great-grandfather endured in the war.
The support of the Kyabram Club has funded the scholarship Matilda received which was organised by Kyabram Club manager Greg Ryan on behalf of the Club and the wider community. It is a great achievement for Matilda as she had to earn her position by sitting in front of a panel of 5 members.
We have no doubt Matilda will take every step in her stride as she is an accomplished athlete, most recently completing a half marathon in New Zealand, so she has a very solid foundation for the physical challenges ahead.
Also being a long-distance runner, brings with it certain mental toughness and she will need that as well for the days of steep climbing, and equally steep, descents, day after day.
We wish you all the best Matilda in your training leading up to this milestone event.
