Welcome to IPS

Ivanhoe Primary School has a rich history dating back to 1853 with William Wood as Principal of 55 pupils in a timber building on the corner of Waterdale Rd and Upper Heidelberg Road.

The impressive red brick building in Waterdale Road the school now occupies, was built in 1923 with the foundation stone laid by Mr John Cain Snr (then Minister for Public Institutions and father of the former Premier of Victoria who was a past pupil of ours).

We celebrated our 150th birthday in 2003 and our enrolments remain stable at around 560 students.

Today the school continues to offer the local community a high quality education program, and enjoys wonderful and ever growing facilities including the most recent additions of the Treehouse in 2018 and the Beehive in 2022.

Our Newsletter "Inside Ivanhoe" used to be named "Durian" an Aboriginal word meaning "message". Ian Rogers, an ex pupil who lived in Green Street dropped a copy in to the school so I thought I would share it with you all.

It looks very different from our current online publication. Check out the Student Voice page of this edition of "Inside Ivanhoe" for examples of student writing from 1968.

There are also a limited number of the school’s history book, ‘Slab Hut to Red Brick’ available from the school office.

Mother’s Day Breakfast, Thursday 9th May

All Mums and special friends of IPS are invited to join us for the annual Mother’s Day breakfast on Thursday 9th May from 7:30am to 8:30am in the school hall.

Please place your food and drink orders via the MySchoolConnect App (www.myschoolconnect.com.au) prior to 7th May

An order confirmation slip will be sent home with your eldest child for you to use to collect your meals when you arrive at the hall on the morning of the breakfast.

There will also be a coffee van at School that morning for you to purchase coffee separately.

We hope to see you there!

Kinder Play Dates

How lovely it was to have children, and their parents,  from local kinders join us this week for a play date. Children joined classes for stories and activities as well got to try out the play equipment.

Thank you volunteers!

Without volunteers we would find it very difficult to offer some of the programs we have at IPS. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the school. Thank you.

Ivanhoe Primary Classroom Helpers Program

We are looking forward to having families and carers helping in our classrooms and programs. The main role of the classroom helper is to help the teacher and support the teaching program.

However, there are expectations around confidentiality and a few helpful rules that you will need to be across.

Below is a link that outlines some protocols and  expectations you will need to be prepared to follow to ensure the partnership is successful.

Once you have been through the slides and you are ready to help,  then approach your child’s teacher and let them know you are interested, and he or she will work out the best place to start.

Hear from ex students on a high school experience

Mr Pearce was fortunate enough to have a transition visit to Thornbury High School this week. Mr Pieter Oosterloo (THS Year 7 Manager) provided a tour of the High School featuring the impressive new buildings including indoor sport space, performing/visual arts rooms and theatre as well as the school's new STEM building.

Former Ivanhoe Primary School students, Georgia, Charlie, Hector and Oisin were able to join Mr Oosterloo and Mr Pearce and give some valuable insight to how they have found transitioning from Ivanhoe Primary to Thornbury High School.

Read what the students have to say on the Student Voice Page of this edition of  "Inside Ivanhoe".
