Year 6

Can you believe we are already halfway through Term 2? Let's have a look at all the amazing things we have been learning in Year 6!
In Literacy, we have been learning about the history of economics in Australia in our knowledge unit. We learnt new words like bartering and trinket. In economics we discussed at the Australian dollar and when Australia introduced the AUD dollar.
In Writing, we have been using our knowledge on the single paragraph outline (SPO) to help us write paragraphs about topics related to economics. We have learnt how to write an engaging topic sentence and concluding sentence.
Every Tuesday some of our students spend their literacy block in participating in Stories in the Walls program. Stories in the Walls is a storytelling program run by the Arts Centre Melbourne. We have finished our planning stage and are now up to drafting our scripts.
Our focus in Numeracy is money and finance. We have been looking at budgeting and how to stick to a budget. In Numeracy, we learnt how to calculate 50%, 25% and 10% off a given total. We are now focusing on calculating a budget which involves a weekly wage, weekly expenses and unexpected expenses. The aim of this is to help us plan a holiday.
In Numeracy, we have also been learning about angles. We were introduced to complementary and supplementary angles. A complementary angle is the sum of two acute angles that equal 90 degrees. A supplementary angle is the sum of two angles that equal 180 degrees.
In our Social and Emotional lessons, we have been looking at mindfulness and how it can help us in our everyday life. Thanks to the Resilience Project we have been able to test out different mindfulness techniques such as; colouring, breath work and many more.
We also had the opportunity to research a gratitude quote that resonates with us. This allowed us to find a quote that was really special to us and help us make our own personal connection to what gratitude means to us.
