Year 5
Mr Jones, Ms Miller, Ms Armstrong & Ms Rowley
This term is flying by with so many fun and exciting things the Year 5’s have been learning!
In Writing, the Year 5 students have been exploring different persuasive devices and language features such as rhetorical questions, exaggeration, modal verbs and using facts and opinions to back up their point of view. We have also been looking at punctuation such as possessive apostrophes, apostrophes of contraction and quotation marks, and how to use this punctuation correctly in our writing.
Our knowledge unit is called Protecting Earth’s Resources. We were lucky enough to have a representative come out from Yarra Valley Water for an incursion that looked at how much water there is on earth and what we can do to become Water Watchers and save water!
In Numeracy, we have been learning how to solve problems using short division. We have started exploring finance and how to calculate change, especially involving cents. This helps to set us up ready for our next topic of decimals, where we will begin with reading and ordering decimals on a number line to the thousandths place. Students are also developing their skills in calculating the area of rectangles and triangles.
In SEL, the Resilience Project has introduced the students to the next key pillar of Mindfulness. Students have learnt that being mindful means slowing down and doing things in a calm way to focus their minds. We explored different ways that we can create a sense of mindfulness including meditation.
