We have been very busy in Year 1 this term and here are some of the wonderful things we have been learning…
In Phonics, we have been learning to read and spell words with digraphs including /sh/, /ch/, /tch/, /ng/ and /ng/. We learn these by saying the sound, saying words, segmenting and blending the words to break them apart, and writing them. Our Let’s spell activities have helped us identify the correct phonemes and graphemes that make up the words to write them.
In Writing, we have been learning about writing simple sentences and using correct punctuation. We make sure we start out sentences with a capital letter and end them with a punctuation mark. We have also been learning to expand our sentences to include details such as when, where, who and what, to make include more detail in our sentences. Each morning we start the day by working on our handwriting to help us correctly form our letters, ensuring the right formation, sizing and use of the baseline.
In Knowledge, we have been learning about many different animals and their habitats, through our much loved friend, Rattenborough! We have looked at the Arctic, the Simpson Desert in Australia, the East African Savanna, and the Saltwater sea life. The students have loved learning about how different animals adapt to their habitats.
We have been learning about place value and representing two digit numbers using base ten blocks. We have learnt strategies such as partitioning, where we split numbers into smaller parts. This helps us to further understand a numbers value, then we have been practising ordering numbers based on their value including smallest to largest. We have just started to learn about number bonds, where a whole number can have parts (example: 10 is a whole number which can have two parts 4 and 6).
We have been exploring the importance of Empathy and what it means to show empathy. We discussed that showing empathy helps those around us, and how we can look at people's facial expressions to understand what someone else may be feeling. Participating in these conversations also helps to be mindful of our own wellbeing and that of others. We have also been learning about what it means to be grateful and acknowledging what we are grateful for.
We have been learning how to sign ways to describe animals, sign numbers and signing feelings. We have also learnt about deaf culture, as well as revising the signs we had learnt from last term to ensure we remember them.
