Innovation and Design

We are excited about what is planned for Term 2 this year!

Foundation

In Foundation, our wonderful students have completed their work for sequencing and have moved on to the design cycle. The foundation students are learning how to use their imaginations to come up with solutions to design problems. As part of the first design cycle, our foundation students are developing a shelter for the three little pigs from the children's story. After finalising their designs, students have worked in groups to construct their shelters using sticks, straws, or Legos.

Year 1

The Year 1 students will continue to explore digital systems which they see around them. They have designed and created their own Squishy smartphones. Further in the term the students will look at the design cycle process, and explore the properties of different natural and man-made materials to complete a STEM challenge.

Year 2

Students in Grade 2 will continue their focus on digital systems and compare digital solutions with non-digital systems. As part of their project, they are constructing a paper model of a digital device they use at school.

Following this the grade 2 students will explore different construction materials and their applications. Students will also explore simple machines to complete a STEM challenge task..

Year 3

Students in Year 3 are learning about the Design Cycle. Students learned about pull and push forces and velocity before applying their knowledge of forces and the design cycle to design a simple machine (Rube-Goldberg Machine). Students worked together in groups to design and build their own Rube-Goldberg Machine.

Year 4

Year 4 students are learning about the Design Cycle process. Using their understanding of the Design Cycle process, students will develop a solution for the Ball Drop challenge.

By combining junk and recycling materials, they need to build a vessel for a ball that lands as slowly as possible on the ground using the concepts of gravity and air resistance.

Year 5

This term, students in Year 5 will explore how origami can be used in science, medicine, and everyday life. Using the different pleats found in origami, they will design and construct a retractable roof from paper. In addition, they will identify the different design elements in our design cycle and construct their own bridge models. You will be able to see some amazing and creative models from them.

Year 6

This month, students will dive into the exciting world of kitchen safety and cooking! Learn essential skills to create delicious treats like fruit skewers and vegan brownies while ensuring a safe culinary adventure. Discover the art of precise measurements, proper knife handling, and effective food hygiene practices. This month we will ignite a passion for innovation and design in the kitchen while prioritising safety. Get ready to cook up a storm and savour the results!
