The Arts

Visual Arts, May 2024

Dear Gilgai Parents and students, it’s been an amazing term with lots of exciting art and craft! As this will be a messy term, please support the art department by ensuring your child brings an art smock (or an old t-shirt) that covers their arms on their art day to ensure their uniform remains clean.

Foundation

The Foundation students are beginning to work on their Eric Carle Hungry Caterpillars. First we will be focusing on creating our very own painted paper. Students will use their knowledge of primary and secondary colours by mixing their own paints. Once dried we will use this paper to create our caterpillars. It will prove to be a messy but fun few weeks in art!

Years 1/2

The Year 1 and 2 students will begin their study on the art element of texture! Students will learn all about modelling clay and develop their hand building clay techniques. They will learn rolling and coiling techniques to create their snakes, before using mark making techniques to create texture. This week students will be practising these skills first by using plasticine. Students will learn how to make a coil snake, pinch pot and other clay techniques to get ready for their clay unit later in the term.

Years 3/4

The Year 3 and 4 students have worked on the art elements including line, shape and pattern, when designing and drawing their Zentangle Hand Drawings. Students have been drawing their designs before refining their work using fineliners. Students have been encouraged not to leave any blank areas and to fill their hands up with lots of exciting lines, patterns and designs!

Years 5/6

The Year 5 and 6 students have been studying the contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama and her famous pumpkin artworks. Students will be using their drawing skills to draw pumpkins realistically, focusing on line, shape and form. We would like to acknowledge and thank Woolworths Kalkallo for their generous donation of the pumpkins so our students have the opportunity to develop their drawing skills. Students will begin their pumpkin sculptures in the next few weeks - stay tuned!
