Learning in Action
Literacy:
In the last 2 weeks students have started to explore note taking as a whole class. Students have been reading non fiction texts about different states in Australia and learning the skill of note taking. From this students are beginning to transfer their information from their notes into a paragraph focusing on ensuring they include a topic sentence and supporting details. In Writing, students have been focusing on their sentence level grammar and incorporating adverbial how, when and where phrases to enhance their sentences.
Preview: Over the next fortnight students will construct paragraphs from their note taking on different states in Australia. In Writing, students will write sentences including subject, verb, adjectives and adverbs. Students will continue to work on their reading goals during independent reading time.
Maths:
Over the past fortnight, students have analysed worded problems to identify the language that indicates that the problem will involve addition and have learned how the ‘parts’ in addition can be added in any order. The Grade 3 students have focused on solving addition problems by using the split strategy, including problems that have three ‘parts’. Students have continued to work on their personal goals during independent practice.
During our location unit, Grade 3 students have listened to the picture story book, ‘Are We There Yet?’, and have selected 5 landmarks from the text to plot onto a map of Australia. Students had to record the grid references for each landmark.
Preview: Over the next fortnight, students will be learning about how the equals sign is a symbol for ‘the same as’. Students will be balancing equations to ensure that the value of number sentences is the same. Students will be continuing their location investigation, focusing on explaining directions using grid references to describe a journey from Melbourne to various Australian landmarks. In our problem solving sessions, students are consolidating their skills in using a table to work systematically to solve various open ended problems.
Inquiry:
Over the past fortnight, students have been learning about the States and Territories that make up Australia and the capital city in each. Using an atlas, they identified and labelled the surrounding oceans and seas. We have also learned about the flora and fauna emblems for each State and Territory. With Anzac Day on April 25, we also took time to learn about and reflect on the significance of the day.
Preview: Over the next fortnight we will be learning, in more detail, about some significant landmarks from around Australia.
Wellbeing:
We commenced this term discussing emotions and how they are a normal part of life. As a class we made a list of all of the different kinds of emotions, grouping them as those that feel good and those that feel uncomfortable or bad. Through role playing and body language, students named the emotion that someone could be feeling and explained why they might feel that way. We also delved into being honest with our feelings, but discussed that we need to practise that in a respectful way.
Preview: Over the next fortnight, we will continue to explore emotions and how certain events cause us to feel positive or negative emotions during a school day and that it can be a bit like a rollercoaster. Continuing with being aware of our feelings and those of others, students will learn to identify friendship goals and how they can help them focus on what is important in creating and maintaining healthy friendships.
Please see the attachment below for a list of friendship goals we will look at.
At Lysterfield Primary School, we promote high expectations for all our students, and want to encourage our students to challenge themselves and tackle new and interesting opportunities. In light of this, we are encouraging interested students in Grades 3-6 to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition this year.
The Australian Mathematics Competition, run by the Australian Maths Trust, is Australia’s longest running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. It is made up of 30 unique problems designed to challenge and extend students’ problem solving skills.
Students have 60 minutes to complete the competition which will occur at school sometime between Tuesday 6th - 8th August (exact date and time TBC).
Every student who participates will receive recognition and an award at their level of achievement. The levels are:
- Participation
- Proficiency
- Credit
- Distinction
- High Distinction
The competition will cost $8.50 per student.
For more information about the competition, watch this video from AMT, check out their website, or contact Zahra Harvey (zahra.harvey@education.vic.gov.au).
If you are interested in your child participating in the Australian Mathematics Competition this year, please add their names to the form below by Friday 31st May:

Exciting times ahead in STEM!
We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.
Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.
Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:
Opportunities to help:
- Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
- If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
- If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
- If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
- Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
