Learning in Action

Reading:

Last week students had an ANZAC focus for reading and we looked at various texts to understand more about ANZAC day and share any knowledge or stories students had. This week we have been using non-fiction texts to form questions about our wonderings based on the book title, locate and find answers to questions.

Preview for Learning:

Students will interpret information by looking at images from a non-fiction text, summarise information and make connections between learnt facts.

Handwriting/ Writing:

This fortnight our handwriting focus was on letters k, v, w, x, z, p, y, g and j

Our writing focus has been on understanding that a question is still a sentence and needs a subject and a linking verb. Students were given a variety of picture prompts to write questions about, using who, what, where, when why and how as questions starters. We also looked at pronouns and what pronouns are specific to people and objects.

Preview for Learning:

Students will be continuing to add pronouns to sentences.

Maths:

Addition has been our focus for the last fortnight and students have been learning different strategies to solve addition problems.

Students have been learning the following strategies.

  • I can make 10
  • I can add the ones and tens
  • I can identify doubles

This fortnight during our applied unit, students have been learning to use positional and directional language such as left, right, clockwise, anticlockwise, forwards and backwards.  Students were given a map and had to locate different animals, record the animals position, read and follow direction to move the animal to a new spot.

This week during our problem-solving lesson, students had a go at 'magic squares' where they had to apply the try, check and improve strategy.

Preview for Learning:

Our addition and location unit are finishing next week, and students will spend the week consolidating what they have learnt through a range of different games and activities.

Inquiry:

This fortnight students have been learning about natural and managed landmarks and identified some that they are familiar with.

As part of our Geography study students learnt the purpose of a globe, how to identify north and south on the globe and locate places on the globe and describe the location.

This term we have been looking at different countries as part of our intercultural capabilities' unit. So far this term students have been learning about the food, schooling, living and clothing of Australian, Italian and American culture.

Wellbeing:

This term Grade 2 students will be working on Problem solving and Stress Management from the 4R's program.
