Learning in Action

Wellbeing

Learning in Action: This fortnight in grade 1, students continued looking at emotional literacy by thinking about different triggers and emotions in others. Students were asked to think about a time in their lives when they felt a large emotion and then reflect on why they felt that way. We also discussed how it is important to use their knowledge of emotions to help them in their friendships. For example, if you have felt angry when someone took something of yours, how would others feel if you took something of theirs. Students also were asked to think of ways to support a friend when they recognise their friend is feeling negative emotions.

Upstander award: This week we also had an Upstander meeting and awarded 2 students for being upstanders.

Congratulations to:

Ruby M (1i) and Isla F (1A)

Preview for Learning:

In the next few weeks, students will reflect and share stories of different emotions through pictures and storytelling. The students will be encouraged to discuss the emotions with peers and suggest ways to show kindness when feeling a negative emotion. After that we will move into a new unit in RRRR and start looking at students personal strengths and what that means.

Literacy

Learning in Action:

This fortnight in reading, we continued our unit on nonfiction texts through making predictions. Students looked at text features and used the ‘touch, look, retell’ strategy to dive deep about what the non-fiction text might be teaching us about. Students also developed a list of possible mistakes that may be made when reading new sounds, words or books. Some of their ideas included, skipping a word or line, reading too fast, mispronouncing a word or diagraph, or missing punctuation. Students practised the ‘check in strategy’ to go back over the road to make sure their reading made sense.

In writing, we focused on expanding simple sentences by adding in a who, when and where to make our sentences more interesting. Students also learned the 6th step to our writing process, edit, and had a go at using their red pencil to edit their writing. Students also enjoyed developing a list of things they know lots about and listed some facts about their expert topic.

Preview for Learning:

In the coming weeks, students will develop statements and questions when looking at different pictures from non-fiction texts and make connections between learned facts. They will also consolidate some diagraphs that we have already learnt while continuing to practise their decoding strategies. Students will also engage in publishing a whole class informative writing piece.

Maths

Learning in Action: This fortnight, students have continued to learn all about addition. We had an amazing brainstorm with the students and were so impressed with the different addition strategies students identified. We have spent some time looking at the strategies of ‘use friends of ten’, ‘count all’ and ‘count on from the bigger number’. It was wonderful to hear students using one of our Term 1 Vocabulary words of ‘efficient’ to describe why counting on from the bigger number is a good strategy to use when adding numbers together. Students have also been learning how the order of numbers doesn’t matter in an addition number sentence - they are just two parts that, when added together, equal the total! In our location and transformation investigation, students have enjoyed hiding an object in the classroom, then using the appropriate positional language to help their partner find it.

Preview for Learning: Next week, we will be looking at addition in some ‘real world’ examples and students will identify which strategy they can use to solve these problems. Our applied topic of location and transformation will conclude with students collaborating with a partner for a two-part investigation into using positional language to give and follow directions using a map.

Inquiry

Learning in Action:

This fortnight in Inquiry students have been learning about the features of human-made and natural landmarks. After watching a ‘Visit Victoria’ video, students were asked to identify what places they recognised and what landmarks were human-made or natural. We later categorised various photos such as the West Gate Bridge, the 1000 Steps, Lysterfield Lake and the Murray River into their correct categories. This would be a wonderful opportunity for parents to chat about some of the landmarks you encounter with your child on your weekends.

Preview for Learning:

In a fortnight we’re all heading to Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground for our very first Grade 1 Excursion! Tune in next fortnight to hear all about it!

Responsible Pet Ownership Incursion

The grade 1 students were lucky to have a Responsible pet ownership incursion last week. The students learnt about keeping pets safe and how to approach a dog when they see one.

Message from STEM:

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
