Molesworth Street Kindergarten

From Amy, Early Childhood teacher
Body Safety and Consent
During term 4, Rosella group has been learning about body safety, consent, and respect for us and others. The children have shown curiosity about their bodies and personal boundaries.
We read familiar books ‘No means No’ ‘My body! My rules!’ and ‘Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept’ to support our conversations about listening, saying “no,” and asking permission like “Would you like a hug?” or “Can I give you a high five?” Using our puppet Cookie, we practised these ideas in a fun and meaningful way.
Children also learned the correct names for private body parts and talked about keeping them private and safe. We sang a body safety song and created a body poster to support their learning. Together, we discussed trusted adults they can talk to if something feels unsafe and learned the difference between a surprise and a secret that should be shared.
We finished by creating our own children’s consent forms, where each child chose whether to give permission for photos or displaying of their work. This helped children understand that their voices, bodies, and choices matter.
Through these experiences, Molesworth Street kindergarten children are developing confidence, respect, and awareness of their rights and the rights of others.
