From Caen, Senior School Auslan teacher
As we approach the end of the term, I want to take a moment to celebrate the fantastic progress your children have made in Auslan. Their signing skills are growing stronger each week, and it’s been wonderful to see their confidence become more refined and independent. Many students are now confidently signing outside the classroom, even in the school yard which is such an exciting sign of meaningful learning.
This term, we have been revisiting signs from Term 3 and continuing our learning from Term 4, with a focus on Occupations and Sports. Students have been practising a wide range of new vocabulary while also strengthening their understanding of HOLM + NMF. I have been so impressed with how well they have remembered and applied these essential building blocks of Auslan.
Students have been extremely engaged in their learning. Our Occupation unit sparked great discussions and role-play opportunities, and it was wonderful to see students taking ownership of their learning and using signs in context. The Sports unit has been equally successful. Students not only learned new signs but also explored the Deaflympics, discovering how Deaf athletes compete, communicate, and celebrate sport. This connection to the real world helped deepen their understanding and appreciation of Auslan within the Deaf community.
Throughout the term, we’ve used games, creative tasks, and Seesaw activities to keep learning fun and purposeful. These activities allow students to practise independently, apply new signs, and show what they know in engaging and meaningful ways. I am truly proud of how hard every student has worked and how much enthusiasm they bring to each lesson.
Thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to ending the term on a strong and positive note as we continue celebrating your children’s achievements in Auslan.
