Year 5 News

Year 5 Newsletter
Term 4 is absolutely rocketing along as we head toward Christmas, and the Grade 5s have been buzzing with energy. It’s that classic end-of-year mix of assessments, celebrations, leadership opportunities and big milestone activities. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.
End-of-Year Assessments
Over the past couple of weeks students have been steadily working through their end-of-year assessments. They’ve shown impressive focus and resilience, especially given how full our calendar has been. We’ve seen students really step up and show just how much progress they’ve made across literacy and numeracy this year, and the calm but determined atmosphere in the classroom has been something to be proud of.
Leadership Applications for 2026
One of the most exciting parts of Term 4 is the leadership application process, and this year’s cohort has gone all in. Leadership applications were offered to our Year 5s and they absolutely rose to the challenge. Students wrote thoughtful letters to various staff members, including our wonderful principal, Julia Stoppa, outlining why they would make strong leaders.
The positions on offer included:
School Captain
Vice-Captain
House Captains
Art Captain
Wellbeing Captain
PYP Ambassador
Sports Captain
Science Captain
It was great to see students take risks, reflect on their strengths and step into the world of school leadership with maturity and confidence. Those who have been shortlisted will soon present a short speech explaining why they would be a great fit for their chosen role. We’re looking forward to hearing their ideas and seeing them shine.
5/6 Sport – Season Wrap-Up
We’ve officially wrapped up 5/6 Sport for the term. Students threw themselves into their sports with great spirit and teamwork all season. Now that the home-and-away rounds are finished, we move into semifinals and finals. It’s been fantastic watching the students build skills, support each other and enjoy a bit of healthy competition.
Prep Buddy Celebration Task
One of the sweetest parts of the term has been helping our Prep buddies with their final learning task of the year. The Year 5s supported the Preps in researching a sea creature, gathering facts and creating a colourful poster to share their learning.
The patience, encouragement and enthusiasm shown by the Year 5s has been top-notch, and the Preps absolutely adored working with their older buddies.
Bike Education Program
Tuesday 9 December and Wednesday 10 December
Our Bike Ed program is just around the corner. Over the two days, students will practise a variety of bike-handling and safety skills here in the school grounds before heading out to nearby streets to apply these skills in real-world situations. It’s always one of the highlights of Year 5, as it blends confidence-building, practical safety knowledge and a good dose of fun. Families can help by making sure bikes are in safe working order and helmets fit snugly.
Looking Ahead
As we wind down the final stretch of the year, the Year 5 team is incredibly proud of how much the students have achieved, how well they’ve supported one another and the maturity they’ve shown as they prepare to head into Year 6. It’s been a busy, lively, rewarding term and we’re excited for the celebrations still to come.
