Year 4 News

Unit of Inquiry

As part of our ‘How the World Works’ unit of inquiry, the Year 4 students have been investigating the Central Idea:

UNDERSTANDING THE WAY MATERIALS BEHAVE AND INTERACT DETERMINES HOW PEOPLE USE THEM.

 The Lines of Inquiry are:

  • The different forms of matter
  • The way matter works
  • The way matter can change
  • The way we use matter

The children have enjoyed Science lessons with Mrs Jones, looking into these Lines of Inquiry and we concluded the unit by conducting an experiment in class groups.

Highlights of Year 4 2025!

Emma, Grace & Lyric - 4C

Science

During Science we did an experiment. It was called the Coca Cola and Mentos experiment.

To start with, we went down to the horseshoe and set up the equipment. To set up the Mentos we had to open them and pour them into a paper tube. To set up the Coke we had to put it on a flat surface (the concrete floor of the horseshoe).

We held a small book on the end of the paper tube and sat the book on top of the open Coke bottle. Then, Ms Carter pulled the book from under the tube of Mentos which was supposed to make them fall into the Coke. Unfortunately the tube was a bit tight so the Mentos got stuck! After a second attempt the Mentos fell into the Coke! They went straight down to the bottom, and lots of bubbles were created when they reacted with the Coke. After a split second, a light brown, fizzy geyser shot out of the top of the Coke!!! o-: !!! The result was exactly as we predicted!

Family Open Morning – Welcome Ms Stoppa!

Year four has been super good, but our favourite thing was the Family open morning and we're going to tell you all about it.

As soon as we arrived we could smell the hot cruffins and croissants. Ms Maxwell was dancing out the front to the music blaring out of the speaker. There was a really happy, positive vibe! There were lots of people lining up and waiting for their delicious breakfast. We had to pre order our food online - we could order croissants, cruffins, muffins and juices. After we collected our food we could sit down with family/friends and eat our breakfast. When the bell rang at 9:00 we lined up and the teachers did the roll. Then we went inside with our family to show them our work or we could go to the specialist classes and show them what we have done in Art, Music, Science, Japanese and Sport. After we finished that we said our goodbyes to our parents and started the day.

Athletics Carnival

One of our favourite things we did this year was the school athletics carnival for Year 4's, 5's and 6's. It was sooo fun!

When we arrived there, hurdles was the first event. The year four boys went first and then the girls. While the girls were racing, Maya from 4B fell and injured her legs and hip and she was really disappointed.

We were split into groups with one teacher leading us to all the events. We had shotput, discus, long jump, triple jump, vortex, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

We had to bring lunch for the day and in between events we got to have a little snack. Mrs Hall, our sport teacher was commentating for the track events.

If your time was the fastest in your heat you would make it into districts. After districts there was division then regionals and finally state.

We had some Beaumaris Secondary students come to help us with the events - they were really nice.

After we finished up for the day we caught the bus back to BNPS. Most of us were exhausted but happy!

It was such an amazing experience, and we would love to do it again!

Tessellations

This year our favourite thing was… tessellation blocks! We use them to create patterns/tessellations.

There are multiple types of blocks including yellow hexagons, blue diamonds, green triangles, red trapeziums, beige diamonds and orange squares. Some of our favourite things to do with them are building fortresses and making patterns in the fortress walls. A good thing about the shapes is that they tesselate easily. It's very cool when you make a big one and it becomes an optical illusion.

Sometimes when we make tessellations, ‘Ziggy Zilla’ comes and destroys our creations! But that just means we get to make another one!

We love making art with the attribute blocks because it's really fun and relaxing.

Estelle, Lucy, Sophie B & Sophie SC - 4C

People (& Animals!)

Our year 4 highlight is about the people and animals that make up 4C - Ms Carter, Janine, our classmates and of course, Ziggy the therapy dog.

Every time we enter the 4C classroom, Ziggy comes up to us and starts jumping and licking us. She likes to give a lot of kisses! Ziggy can also do a lot of amazing tricks when her therapy jacket is off.

Poppy is Ziggy's twin sister and one day Ms Carter brought her into school as a special visitor! They chased each other around and were very cute together. 4C had so much fun meeting Poppy.

Ms Carter is an amazing teacher and we all love her because she makes learning fun and interesting. She also makes us feel like we can always reach our goals. Ms Carter is very kind, empathetic, reasonable, caring and just so amazing.

Janine helps people when they need help and she also explains things clearly to everyone when they need it. When we are doing tests, Janine knows when we need help so she comes and talks about what we are having trouble with. If we don't understand something, Janine will explain things in a different way that we understand but she will not give the answer away!

We love 4C and it’s the best class ever!

Leo – 4C

PE - Rugby

In year 4, PE was amazing and I'm going to tell you why. My class did my favourite sport, rugby! The person teaching us rugby was Henry.

We had 2 sessions and in our first session my class had to pick a partner and once you had a partner you and your partner would have to stand in front of a cone and the other person had to go on the other side and face it.

Then if Henry says head you both put your hands on your head and if he says cone you would try to pick up the cone before your partner does.

After that we had to grab a ball and do as many rugby passes as you can with your partner, to do a rugby pass you hold the ball and bring it down to your waist if your right handed you would probably put it on your right side of your waist but you can do any side, once you've put it at your waist you would spin it with your hands or not.

A few minutes later Henry put in some challenger, he made it so we had to do 3 claps when your partner throws the ball and it's in the air.

When we finished that Henry did Wallabies and Wallaroos - I was on the Wallaroos and the Wallaroos and Wallabies hade to make a line, the Wallabies had the balls and my team had to try to tag them so Henry chose 3 children to score a try and 1 child to tag them.

The next week we did session 2 and that was our last session.

During session 2 we were different colours - I was pink and my team was Charlie, Marcus, Lyric and Jude. First we played tic tac toe and our team won. After we had 1 ball and a cone a few metres away and we had to hold the ball and squish it on the cone.

After we had two groups with two kids with a string on them and all the other kids had to touch the ball on them. But it was not easy - the rules were you can't throw and if you have the ball you can't move so all the other kids moved around and the person passed the ball and we tried to quickly tag them.

Next was my favourite - we did a game called netball rugby so if you had the ball you can't move. And you have to throw it like a rugby pass and if the ball touches the ground whatever team touched it last the other team gets the ball, but Henry changed the game a little bit. If you have the ball you can run if you want but if someone tags you it’s a turn over but when you're running you can pass it and if you pass it and the person catches it the person with the ball  can choose to run or stand still. If you stand still the other team can't tag you and you can pass the ball whatever way you want but the other team can intercept it and when you start running you can't stop until you score a try or you pass it and a try is when you score, you have your hands on the ball and it has to be touched pass the cane so your hand has to be touching  the ball and the ball has to be touching the grass at the same time.

And that was my favourite thing about Year 4!

Jude & Aree - 4C

BTN

4C has really loved watching BTN every Wednesday. BTN stands for ‘Behind The News’ and it is a TV program that tells you all about the recent kid friendly news. This year there has been news about the government/Prime Minister, celebrations like Anzac Day or Remembrance Day, taxes or treaties made by America and talks about famous people and events.

In every episode there is a quiz which is a test about our knowledge of a current event. Sometimes it will be a multiple choice question instead of a single answer question. We get quite excited and competitive about the quizzes and celebrate if we get the answers right.

There is always a sports report about the weekly sporting events around the world and we especially love the video highlights. BTN is a great way to keep up to date with current affairs!

Amaya - 4C

Buddy Letters

One of the most exciting things we have done in year 4 is writing Christmas stories for our buddies. It's so much fun creating stories for the new Preps. My buddy's name is Sofia. When I'm colouring my story, I think about what her favourite colour is and what type of toys she plays with. I wonder if she's going to like my story. We also wrote buddy letters, which we sent in the mail. I can't wait to meet my buddy!

Imogen - 4C

Swimming Carnival

Do you want to learn about the Swimming carnival? I'm sure you do!

Finally, in year 4, we can go to the Swimming Carnival!

In Term 1, year 4, 5 and 6 all competed at the Swimming Carnival and it was so much fun! There were 50 metre races first then there were 25 metre races. There were so many races such as freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. I did 50 metre freestyle and I came 2nd because when the horn blew I dived off the diving board late and I think I would have come first if I dived off the board at the right time. I also did 25 metre freestyle and I came 2nd in that too which means I got into Districts!

It’s true, I did get into districts alongside Emma W, Maya T and Darcy M. We were in the relay together. We went to MSAC for the competition and we raced in an outside pool with a cover. The races started and I sat there in the stands watching until it was my turn. I felt butterflies in my stomach, then before I knew it, I was lining up ready to dive in the pool. Darcy swam before me and when she touched the wall under me it meant I could dive into the pool so I did... I dived into the pool and I was off! I did freestyle all the way to the end and as I was climbing out of the pool I asked, "Did we win?" They all said, "No," but we did come 4th. We didn't make it into Division but we tried our best. Then we hopped onto the bus back to school.

Liam S – 4C

Quacktopia

What is Quacktopia?

Quacktopia is a civilisation that is made of 3D printed ducks. The ducks were printed by me, Liam S! Quacktopia has paper origami houses, also made by me.

How did Quacktopia start?

Quacktopia was started when Annabel fractured her fibular... I felt bad so I asked my dad where he had the ducks, and I brought 4 of them to school then gave them to Annabel who gave 1 to Liam A.

I made houses for Annabel and Liam A and came up with a paper origami house design that worked really well.

Then we decided we should make a civilisation, so we asked Ms Carter and she said yes!

Passion Project

Do you know what a Passion Project is? Come to Year 4 and find out!

The Passion Project originated from Genius Hour.

For a Passion Project, you can choose whatever topic you're passionate about and you spend time planning and researching that topic so you can share your knowledge with the class.

You choose whatever way you want to present your topic such as poster, diorama, Canva, PowerPoint, cue cards and games.

A Passion Project takes as long as it takes, so you're not under any pressure. You present to the class when you're ready.

We did our first Passion Project on our own and then had the chance to collaborate with a friend for our second one.

It is a great opportunity to hear about each other’s interests. This year we have learnt about all sorts of famous people, events and topics that our classmates have become experts on.

Here are some of the presentations we have enjoyed:

  • Marie Curie
  • Cyclone Tracy
  • Paris
  • Sydney Roosters
  • Wings of Fire
  • Neil Daniher
  • Oskar Schindler
  • Queen
  • Titanic
  • Grow a Garden
  • LeBron James
  • Michael Jordan
  • Penguins
  • Kangaroos
  • Arsenal
  • Beavers
  • Essendon’s History
  • American quarter horses
