Year 3 Maths
Mapping the Fairy Wren Enclosure!
This week in Year 3, our enthusiastic mappers took their learning outside, exploring the Fairy Wren enclosure while creating their very own grid maps. Using a grid with letters along the bottom and numbers up the side, students became mini cartographers, carefully plotting each landmark in just the right spot.
To make their maps come alive, students designed their own map legends, complete with creative symbols for features like large trees, sprinklers, pathways, and the water tap.
Once their maps were complete, students practised using grid references and positional language to write statements about the landmarks on their maps.
Everyone had an enjoyable time learning outdoors, and it was wonderful to see the students confidently describing where each part of the garden belonged.
Letters to Our Future Selves
This week, students worked on a special writing task: creating letters for their future selves. These letters will be safely stored away and returned to them when they reach Year 6.
Before writing, the class brainstormed all the special things that have happened this year, plus fun moments from weekends and any other memorable events they wanted their future selves to remember.
Students then wrote about their interests, favourite foods, hobbies, friends, and pets. Many also added hopes and predictions for what life might be like in a few years’ time.
It was a thoughtful and enjoyable activity, and we look forward to seeing their reactions when they open these letters again in the future!
Unit of Inquiry:
How We Organise Ourselves
Last week, Year 3 began their new Unit of Inquiry exploring the central idea that people form communities based on their needs and resources.
Students started by discussing what a community is and identifying different communities. They thought about how people in a community help one another and reflected on the communities they belong to themselves. This included groups such as their family, school, sports teams, neighbourhood, and cultural or religious communities. Students turned their ideas into concept maps, showing just how many communities they are part of.
The class then explored images of city skylines, suburban houses, and rural farms. Students sorted the images into urban, suburban, and rural groups and completed a Venn diagram to compare their features and differences.
It was a great start to the unit, and students enjoyed discovering just how many communities they are part of and how each one plays an important role in their lives.
