With Our Buddies
Last week, our Prep students enjoyed a special visit with their Year Five Buddies to work on their Sea Creature posters as part of our current unit, Sharing the Planet.
The Year Five students guided the Preps in researching a sea creature of their choice. Together, they gathered key information, first jotting ideas on whiteboards and then organising these facts onto posters using subheadings. Many children chose headings such as habitat, diet, predators, features, camouflage, and interesting facts, and recorded their learning under each section.
The Buddies also helped the Preps design an eye-catching title for their posters and print photos of their chosen sea creature. It was wonderful to see the older students supporting the younger ones so patiently and enthusiastically.
The Preps thoroughly enjoyed their morning with their Buddies and created some fantastic posters. We look forward to seeing them confidently share their work with the class during their upcoming oral presentations.
Class Big Books
Throughout the year, our Prep children have loved creating their own class big books. Working with a partner, they illustrate different pages, making sure their drawings match the text. We begin each project with choral reading, reading the story together on the whiteboard before getting to work on our pages.
Last week, we read Shark Bay by Michelle Hutchison from SMART Spelling. In this story, a family heads off on a camping holiday to Shark Bay by the beach. They spend their days exploring the reef, spotting sea creatures, and even feeding the stingrays. The story’s clear, phonics-focused language makes it perfect for early readers.
Once we finished reading, the class enthusiastically created their own Shark Bay big book. Our class books are always a favourite during quiet reading time, and it’s wonderful to see the children proudly revisiting the stories they’ve helped to make.
Well Done Grace!
