Year 2 Bulletin

Term 3 Big Idea:
As scientists we must observe the changes to living things to better understand our world and to make informed choices.
Learning Intention:
To observe and record the changes as seeds grow.
Learning experience overview:
Through our Big Idea the Year 2 students have been engaging in activities to broaden their understanding of our natural environment. We have explored the important role science plays in our daily lives and as ‘scientists’, the students have identified the characteristics and basic needs of living things and how they change and grow over time.
In our Literacy, we used the Big Book, ‘Five Beans’ to introduce the students to journal/diary writing. We followed the narrator as they planted, cared for and recorded the changes to the seeds as they grow.
In their small Literacy groups, the students are following a written procedure, outlining the steps needed to plant 3 different types of seeds, including a broad bean, a corn and a pumpkin seed. These are being planted in a clear plastic cup to allow the students to make observations and describe the changes and the growth they observe.

Over the coming days and weeks, the students will be recording their observations, on a table, noting the size, colour and shape of each seed as they begin to germinate. It is an expectation that they record detailed observations, measuring and describing the changes as they occur. The students are excited about caring for their seeds and eagerly watching for the signs of growth and change.
Discussion Questions:
How long will the seeds take to grow/germinate? (Prediction)
What part of the plant will grow first? (roots/stem)
What might happen if our cups are in the shade? In the dark?
Which seed will germinate first? Second…
How much water will the seeds need? (volume and capacity)
What will happen if they outgrow their container? (Measurement/next steps)
