School SleepOut at Optus
Our annual Sleep Out on the Roof is not a fund-raiser like its bigger sibling at Optus Stadium, but rather an awareness-raiser about homelessness in society, particularly in the city.
Year 7 to 9 students joined our 2024 Anglicare Ambassadors to take part in discussions, unroll their sleeping bags on the roof and curl up on cardboard donated by Officeworks. The experience included hearing from Darmesh, owner of Game City, our nearest coffee shop in William St, who runs a pay-it-forward scheme to provide coffee for those who cannot afford it. Darmesh brought a guest who has experienced homelessness. Our students were keen to hear his story and asked lots of questions. One of the students later commented: “That was so much better than watching a video’’.
Many thanks to Fr Gift, Miss Hewitt and Ms Yoxall for taking part in the event which ended at 6.30am on Saturday morning. A special shout-out to Year 11 Lucas Caporn for his contribution. It earned him a St George’s Superstars nomination (see the last page of The Dragon).
Following the sleepout was another Service-Learning event in which our student leaders and ambassadors joined submariners from the USS Hawaii to plant trees at John Oldham Park, Perth, on the invitation of the City of Perth. The Lord Mayor and CEO of the City of Perth popped by and thanked everyone for making our city a more welcoming green space.
Coming up, a group of Year 9 to 11 students alongside Mr Tom Dempers and Ms Lena Olsen will attend a second 2024 service trip to All Saints’ Primary School in Samoa during the September school holidays. We wish them all the very best.
