The Level 4 Cafe was brimming at Thursday lunchtime this week with our inaugural Market Day project - part of the Year 10s' Future CEO course.
Students were required to work in groups to develop a business concept for the target market (fellow students of St George’s) that they could run during a lunchtime. It required them to develop a product, work out a pricing strategy, a promotional strategy, conduct market research, calculate their profits etc. Students came up with a business name and logo to suit their business. The Humanities department gave each group $50 start up capital to get them started, which is to be repaid.
On the day the majority of groups sold out of their stock and the reception from the students was overwhelming. All groups finished with a profit. The Cookies and Crunch group were very proactive, developing their own Instagram page, printing stickers and taking pre-orders of around $160 even before Market Day began.

In Week Seven, our Year Ten students participated in three separate workshops delivered by the Bell Shakespeare Company to support their Term Three study of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Hannah Davidson, from Bell, delivered a presentation on prose and verse, to guide the students in understanding how Shakespeare employed meter and verse as a characterisation device.
This was a lovely hands-on workshop that involved clapping and stomping out the meter of key scenes in order to develop an initial understanding of the role of meter and verse in some of the play’s key scenes. Hannah did a wonderful job of bringing this aspect of the text to life delivering it as only a trained actor truly could. We hope to bring Bell Shakespeare back to our campus in Term Four so that we can build on this connection, in preparation for our end of year examinations.

Our upcoming showcase of creative arts – to be held in the Foyer of 140 St Georges Terrace – celebrates student achievement in painting, drawing, sculpture, digital design and more. It also fosters a sense of community as parents are invited to view the works and enjoy rereshments on opening night.
Students are now completing their works in the Art Room. The opening night event for families will be on Tuesday, 22 October from 6pm, with invitations sent home.
