Switching into countdown mode

Spring has sprung and September is here as we edge ever closer to the end of Term Three 2024. Our Year 12s are now very much in countdown mode as they head into their final few weeks of school. We wish them all the very best for their ATAR Mock Examinations or final APEx assessments which commence from Wednesday, 11 September.

These last few weeks are incredibly crucial and can often make a significant difference to their final grades. I encourage our soon-to-be-graduates to study hard and to prioritise their learning alongside their own wellbeing as they approach the end of Year 12 – eat well, sleep well, learn well.

This week we congratulated the top six students in our 2025 Student Leadership selection process. These six students will now present their Captains Speeches to the school on Monday at St George’s Cathedral before the second round of voting takes place. Two of these students will become our School Captains for 2025 – it is an exciting time. A huge congratulations to Rory Bingham, Zuri Hawkins, Ben Humphreys, Joss Walker, Ava Watters and Alison White.

Mrs de Witt and her team celebrated Languages Week this week with a range of PCG quizzes and competitions exploring the languages and cultures in our community. The week sought to raise awareness of the benefits of language learning as well as acknowledging the diversity of our staff and student population. In Australia, we are lucky to have a rich linguistic heritage, with Aboriginal languages that have been spoken for over 10,000 years and, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, ‘In 2016, there were over 300 separately identified languages spoken in Australian homes with over one-fifth of Australians speaking a language other than English at home’.

Being a multicultural country, cultural diversity is something that we should cherish and celebrate. It makes Australia such an amazing place to call home. Learning a language encompasses so much more than language proficiency – it’s a chance to understand the people and culture of a place and it is this that keeps our languages classes here at St George’s such places of innovation and learning.

Languages Week took over the screens in our classrooms, had J Pop and C Pop music playing through the school speakers and thanks to our canteen staff, provided a different Japanese or Chinese hot meal on a daily basis – what a wonderful week to celebrate cultural diversity, inclusion and understanding.

The more languages you know, the more human you are.

_ Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk

So, in light of the celebrations of language learning here at St George’s this week,

In Japanese: いい週末を!

In Chinese: 祝你周末愉快!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
