Red Class News

Miss Graham

This term has been a busy and exciting one for K/1! The students have been forming new friendships and coming together as a class.

In literacy, they have been using the sounds they've learned to help with reading and writing, and it's been rewarding to reflect on just how far they have come since the start of the year.

In numeracy, the students have been focusing on number patterns. Kindergarten have been practicing adding numbers together, while Year One have been working on adding, as well as writing number sentences.  We made counting by 2's fun by using hopscotch squares to practice counting.

K/1 celebrated National Indigenous Literacy Day, which is an annual event that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ stories, cultures, and languages. This year the students tuned into a live-streamed film, followed by a colouring activity based on the story shared during the stream.

For R U OK Day, we spoke about different scenarios and had meaningful discussions about the importance of checking in with those around us—not just on this day, but any day.

A highlight for the class last week was a surprise visit from a baby kangaroo thanks to Miss Simone’s daughter, who is a WIRES volunteer. The children were absolutely thrilled!

In science, the book 'Who Sank the Boat?' sparked great conversations around floating and sinking. Each student got to test their own cabbage leaf boat to see how many Lego people it could hold before sinking. While waiting for their turn, they had fun drawing boats filled with different animals.

We hope K/1 enjoy a well-deserved two-week holiday, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the final term of the school year!
