Dhirrabuu (Deadly) Learning in Cultural Immersion Groups
At St Edward's School we provide our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with an opportunity to connect with country, culture and language through Cultural Immersion Groups supported by our AEAs. Below, we will be sharing images and a small blurb about activities that are completed in each grades group.
Grade | Lesson Activity |
---|---|
3 | Mother Earth This week, Year 3 continued working on their artwork from the storybook, Mother Earth. |
4 | Family (Dhiiyaan) in Gamilaraay This week, Year 4 learnt Dhiiyaan names in Gamilaraay language. |
5 | People, Groups and Animals (Dhii) Our students yarned about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the symbols that are used to represent them in Aboriginal artwork. The students also focused on symbols used to represent animals. |
6 | Indigenous History Project Our Year 6 students have selected a cultural area to research and create a project on. We are super excited to complete these and present to our Cultural Immersion group. They will complete this activity for the remainder of the term. |
Dhirrabuu (Deadly) Dhulu (Message Stick) Pen Pals:
This term our Cultural Immersion students in grades 2 & 5 have started a pen pal program. This program has been implemented by the AEA team to prepare our Year 2 students transitioning to the Primary Campus next year with a buddy support system. Our current Year 5 students will transition to Year 6 next year and becoming our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders of the school.
The students were super excited to find out about this new program and we cannot wait to watch the new friendships begin. Watch this space for some images of the program!

Student Learning Progress Meetings - Week 9 & 10
Over the last two weeks of term, teachers are available for student learning progress meetings. These three way conversations are an opportunity for learning to be discussed between students, parents/carers and teachers. The aim of these meetings is to celebrate success, highlight student strengths and current achievement and then determine future learning goals. If you have not made a booking, please make contact with your child's class teacher.
MUFTI DAY for Marlee - Tuesday 24th September
We invite all students in K-6 to wear blue or purple mufti clothes to school next Tuesday 24th September and bring a gold coin donation.
One of our beautiful students in Year 4 has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and has commenced treatment at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Students in Year 4 have been planning ways to show their support for Marlee. They have organised some special activities next Tuesday 24th September to raise money for Ronald McDonald House.
On this day, we will have a Cake stand at the Primary Campus and a Zooper Dooper stall at the Infants Campus. All items are $1 each
Marlee’s favourite colours are blue and purple, so we invite all students in K-6 to wear either colour to school on this day, along with a gold coin donation. Thank you for your support.
