HISTORY - ROWVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL TIME CAPSULE

We’ve had several enquiries from members of the wider community lately regarding the Rowville Primary School Time Capsule. The Time Capsule was buried under the flagpole in October 1985. When the flagpole was moved to a more central location so was the time capsule!  I believe it was part of a whole school project and part of the celebrations for Colonial Day 1985. Students wrote pieces to be included in the time capsule and some significant newspaper articles of interest were also added. The Time Capsule was opened on the 25 October, 2013 as part of our 40th Birthday Celebrations.

Unfortunately the time capsule was not waterproofed enough and the articles and student writing pieces were badly damaged. The articles that could be partly saved have been laminated and made into a book so that we can read them in the future. They will be kept as part of our Historical Archives.

VALE CHRIS MCKIMMIE

I was saddened to read that Australian Author and Illustrator Chris McKimmie died recently aged 77. I first came across his children’s books many years ago when Brian Banana Duck Sunshine Yellow (2006) was shortlisted in the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual Children’s Book Awards. I have taken an interest in his work ever since. He was a writer, artist, designer, musician, and lecturer. Brian Banana Duck Sunshine Yellow stood out from all the others. I remember reading it and thinking wow what a strange title for a children’s book. It was unique, completely different from many of the books that were being published at the time. Chris McKimmie made the reader look more closely at the illustrations in his books. He created curiosity with every page. I liked how he made the reader think more deeply about what was happening in the story and didn’t just give you all the answers.

I recommend reading some of his books. We have the following titles: I Need A Parrot, Two Peas in a Pod, Special Kev, Brian Banana Duck Sunshine Yellow, Crickey and Cat, Alex and the Watermelon Boat, Lara of Newtown, Scarlett and the Scratchy Moon and Me, Teddy. Be curious and enjoy.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

I would like to thank the school community for your continued support of Scholastic Australia’s Bookclub. Every purchase you make enables our school to order additional books and resources. All of our students benefit from the additional books that are selected. Some are added to classroom libraries, some are taken by teachers to use to create reading enjoyment in the class, some are used for teaching reading strategies and many students enjoy taking them home to read. It’s a win-win situation and many popular titles have been added to the collection. Thank you and I look forward to your support again next year.

BOOK DONATIONS

Thank you to Mabel Year 3 for your recent book donations of Willa and Woof, The Homesick Kitten and Pizazz vs the New Kid. I’m sure they will be read and enjoyed.

STUDENT’S LIBRARY BOOKS

It’s that time of year again when we are in the process of collecting student loans. Could everyone please make some time to check at home for any Rowville Primary School library books as well as any classroom readers? Please do your best to locate the items and return them to school. I remind everyone that you can access Oliver V5 our library cataloguing system through Compass to check your current loans. If anyone has any enquires or has misplaced or lost a book please let me know as soon as possible.

For your information the last day for student borrowing will be Friday 1 December, 2023 and all student loans will be required to be returned to school by Monday 4 December, 2023. Thank you.
