Principal's Report

Dear Rockhampton North Special School Community,

A Time to Celebrate: Year 6 and 12 Graduation Ceremonies

As the sun sets on another incredible school year, we stand on the brink of a truly special moment – our Year 6 and 12 Graduation Ceremonies. These events aren't just a formality; they're a celebration of journeys, achievements, and the vibrant future awaiting our students. Let's come together to applaud their achievements and encourage them as they embark on their new paths. Our school community is a family, and as such, we share in the joy and pride of these milestones. Our staff work tirelessly to ensure that these celebratory events remain a golden moment in the memories of our students, staff, and families. Thank you.

For our Year 6 graduates; Bradley, Rashard, Zoe, Logan, Rory, Abbey and Xavier this ceremony marks a significant transition. They've grown tremendously, not just in height but in character and capabilities. The laughter, learning, and friendships they've experienced here have prepared them for the exciting world of high school. We're incredibly proud of each one of them and can't wait to see how they thrive in their next chapter.

Our Year 12 graduates; Joseph, Zac and Eden are on the cusp of a new adventure. As they step out of our school gates for the last time as students, they carry with them not just academic knowledge, but life skills, resilience, and memories that will last a lifetime. Their journey through Rockhampton North Special School has been unique and inspiring, filled with challenges they've overcome and successes they've celebrated.

My wish to all these students is to keep growing as compassionate, courageous and cooperative individuals. Here's to our graduates – the future looks bright because of you!

School Hours

Recent media reports suggesting a decrease in our school hours are premature. At this stage, we are not considering reducing the school week to four days. Any change to school hours requires a lengthy process, including a community vote. We recognise many families rely on our current schedule, especially those without the flexibility to accommodate an extra day of childcare. We understand the needs of our students and their families, and at this stage, there will not be a decrease in school days.

Explicit Improvement Agenda

As we look forward to 2024, our Explicit Improvement Agenda is set with two pivotal goals. Firstly, we're excited to develop and implement Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, tailored to our unique environment. This involves delivering an age-equivalent curriculum, marking a new approach for our dedicated staff. It's a step towards ensuring that every student's educational journey is both challenging and rewarding.

Secondly, we aim to foster a stronger sense of belonging within our school community. The upcoming year is especially significant as we transition into our new building. This move symbolises a fresh start and an opportunity to reunite our community, which, admittedly, has felt somewhat disjointed due to the construction. The physical barriers that once stood are now making way for open spaces of connection and interaction.

These goals underscore our commitment to not just academic excellence, but also to nurturing a warm, inclusive community where every member feels valued and connected. Here's to a year of growth, unity, and exciting new beginnings.

In conclusion, as we celebrate the milestones of our Year 6 and 12 graduates, we also look forward to the future with optimism and determination. Despite rumours, our school week remains unchanged, upholding our commitment to the needs of our families. The upcoming year brings exciting changes, including the implementation of the new Australian Curriculum and a move to a new building, symbolising a fresh start and renewed unity. Together, we step into a year of growth, community, and new beginnings at Rockhampton North Special School.

Have a lovely weekend everybody.

Kind regards,

Dehlia Dawson
