STRIVE: Year 9 students have been studying Chemistry this term. They have just completed a series of 3 experiments in preparation for their CAT, that investigate factors that affect the rate of chemical reaction. Students had to conduct the experiments with a degree of independence, setting up the equipment, collecting materials and following the method. They made predictions by constructing an hypothesis about the different factors they investigated and the affect on the rate of reaction.
UNITE: Hands On Learning students went out to Moriac Primary School to get their veggie garden up and running. We achieved a lot in two days and the primary school students are now ready to plant their gardens with some spring vegetables.
Our Hand On Learning students have been lending a helping hand at Torquay Community House, providing community lunches, which has been very popular with our local community. This wonderful initiative also assists our students with experience to help prepare them for future job prospects. You may read all about it in the news article below, courtesy of Surf Coast Times:
RESPECT: Students in Year 11 Environmental Science are conducting an experiment to compare the health of various wetlands around Torquay. This week students visited Deep Creek where pollutants were measures and observations of wildlife and macroinvertebrates were taken.
FLOURISH: Year 8 student Oscar G represented Surf Coast Secondary College in the Interschool Snow Sports competition in several snowboarding events. Oscar placed 16th in the Division 3 Snowboard Cross event and 12th in the Division 3 Snowboard Slopestyle event. He has secured a place in the National Interschool Snow Sport Snowboard Cross competition and we wish him all the best of luck.
STRIVE: We are so proud of students Colin H and Anthea C for embarking on the Geelong Youth Engagement Kokoda Trek for 2023. What an incredible opportunity, and we can’t wait to hear all about this amazing experience.
UNITE: Year 10 Fashion Design students travelled to the Geelong Wool Museum to participate in the We are The Makers Exhibition. This exhibition displayed a range of world fashion pieces that showed innovation in techniques through sustainability. Students learnt about use of materials, techniques, technologies and processes throughout the exhibition to apply in their own practices for CAT 3.
“In a world where social media, the media and our education system often creates pressures to conform to norms, broken structures, and certain standards; our theme hopes to encourage young people to embrace their unique perspectives and to share their stories with others.
For young people who identify as LGBTQIA+, the theme represents the importance of taking ownership of their narratives and to share their experiences in their own voices. This process of storytelling can be empowering and affirming and by speaking from their hearts, young people can also contribute to a broader cultural shift towards greater acceptance and visibility for LGBTQIA+ individuals.”
RESPECT: Students from all year levels were invited to the library to enjoy a safe space to ‘write a story’, about themselves, about a friend they support or just a story … the day was a success with some great prizes to be won. Thank you to Carly in the library for all the support in creating such a wonderful event for our students.
FLOURISH: Six of our incredible Year 9 students have spent the last 8 weeks over in Marlo learning about themselves in a leadership capacity while undertaking exciting outdoor activities. Students have been developing an understanding of respectful relationships, diversity, team goals and conflict management strategies.
Last week, staff member Georgina Sheens was invited up to the Snowy River Campus to watch our Year 9 students speak in front of a crowded room on Community Learning Project (CLP). Our students have spent the last 8 weeks working together to achieve a common community goal, to educate our young people on the importance of taking rubbish home from the beach. Georgia R, Jasper V, Xas C, Don C, Taylor W & Melody N should be very proud of themselves on an amazing term.
