Year 7/8 Girls and Year 8 Boys NMR Grand Final and Year 8 Boys STATE AFL Final

On Tuesday 1st August, the 7/8 Girls and Year 8 Boys AFL teams travelled to Barling Reserve in Reservoir for the Northern Metropolitan Region Grand Final. Having both gone through the pool stage undefeated, they both faced Diamond Valley College and Hazel Glen College respectively in the final. Both teams came along for the whole day to support the other.

The girls’ game was first at 10am where they faced a very experienced outfit in Diamond Valley College. The girls fought all game through what was quite a physical, but highly skilled affair. After trailing Diamond Valley College by 3 goals at ¾ time, they fought back to get within a goal. Unfortunately the clock wasn’t on our side and the girls ended up going down by 7 points to finish Runners Up in the Northern Metropolitan Region.

The boys’ game was next at 1pm against Hazel Glen. Our boys had a strong start kicking 5 goals to 1 in the opening quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the game. In an all-round team performance, the boys went on to win by 90 points, proving to be too fast and skilled for their opposition, qualifying for the School Sport Victoria State Finals.

On Wednesday 16th August, the Year 8 Boys AFL team travelled to Ballarat for the highly anticipated State finals.

Our first challenge was the State Quarter Final against Brauer College. The boys began with great vigour, securing an early lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Brauer College responded strongly coming back in the second quarter, leaving us trailing by 16 points at halftime.

As the breeze picked up during the 3rd quarter, our boys seized the opportunity, kicking 4 goals and propelling Greensborough to a commanding 10-point lead heading into the 4th quarter. For a tense 15 minutes, our team stood tall, thwarting numerous forward 50 entries from the opposition and clinching a hard-fought 2-point victory.

The next hurdle was the State Semi Final, where we faced off against Maribyrnong College. Despite our boys' valiant efforts, Maribyrnong ultimately proved too formidable, emerging as the victors.

Both the Year 7/8 Girls AFL and Year 8 Boys AFL teams have been training hard since late Term 1 and should be commended for their dedication since. To have both teams finish within the top 16 schools in Victoria for the girls and top 4 schools in the state for the boys, it truly is an outstanding effort for such an amazing group of students.

Year 7 Boys Football (Soccer)- NMR and STATE FINAL

On Friday 18th August, our Year 7 Boys football (soccer) team competed in the Northern Metropolitan Finals held at Darebin International Sports Centre in Thornbury. The boys were in very capable hands with Johnathan Kouloumentas, Adrian Bogoevski and Lucas Vozinidis from Year 8 as coaches. In the first game against University High, the boys faced a tough opposition but came out winners 2-1. They played Preston High School next and after a hard-fought game in trying conditions, came out with a draw (3-3). For the last game before finals, the boys faced a confident Edgars Creek but thanks to some amazing saves from Asher Roffey as our goalkeeper, the boys won through to the final with a result of 3-1.

In the NMR final, the boys came up against Sirius College. The momentum swung many times and with the result sitting on a draw with 30 seconds to go, Aiman Mohd Fadly hit the back of the net to send Greensborough to the State finals- result 4-3.

Aiman was presented with a match ball for taking out player of the tournament.

On Friday 1st September, the boys returned to Thornbury International Sports Centre for the State Finals. First game was against Kambrya College, it was a tough game against an experienced opponent- the boys lost 1-3. Secondly, they faced Ballarat High School and with some very experienced talent down back and up forward, the boys came out with a draw- 2-2. The last game of the game saw Greensborough vs. Greater Shepparton College. The boys put up a big challenge but went down 1-2.

A fantastic effort by all of the boys- Greensborough College’s first ever boys football (soccer) team to make it to the State Finals! Well done boys!!
