Mathematics Faculty

As we come to the end of another term, it is nice to reflect on what has been happening in Maths at Henry Kendall High School.

Year 7 have studied rates and ratios then looked at some foundational algebra and equations knowledge. Also in Stage 4, Year 8 have been working with probability and have been explored Pythagoras’ Theorem.

In Stage 5, Year 9 have been leaning about different aspects of measurement as well as studying the trigonometric ratios. Year 10 have also studied Trigonometry and examined linear and non-linear relationships.

Year 11 students have experienced their first formal examination period. It is important to take on board the lessons learned regarding preparation to lay a platform for success throughout Year 12.

Our wonderful Year 12 students have completed their Trial HSC Exams and are currently preparing for their final exams. The Maths Faculty are incredibly proud of the work ethic that these students are showing and wish you all the best for the exams and beyond. You will be genuinely missed. Remember to leave no stone unturned in your preparations and utilise the expertise of your teachers as much as possible right up till the end.

The prestigious “Golden Calculator” continues to gain fame. This is awarded at each Celebration Assembly (twice per term) to recognise a student who consistently strives for success in Maths. Students receive the privilege of using the golden calculator in class as well as a $10 voucher for our school canteen. Congratulations to both Aimee Filan (Year 7) and Henry Chen (Year 12) who were our recipients this term.

A reminder that our Maths and Milo program continues to run. This is a place where all students are welcome before school on Tuesdays. Students can drop-in to room GL9 any time from 8.00am and can receive assistance with their Maths from a teacher, work through maths problems with their friends, complete their Maths homework, and of course, get a free hot or cold Milo. There is no need to sign-up, just arrive on the day.

Our junior students are utilising MathsOnline as a platform for weekly homework. This allows students access to much needed repetition of classroom concepts in a format that provides instant feedback to the students. The program also allows students to watch a video recording of concepts in their own time to clarify their understanding. All Year 7 students have weekly homework due each Thursday and Year 8 each Friday. Years 9 and 10 classes have individual arrangements with their teachers.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable spring holiday break and look forward to a positive Term 4.
