Principal's Report

Welcome to our first newsletter! We thought this was a quick and simple way to keep you updated as we continue to prepare for the opening of the College in 2024. This newsletter can be translated and should be shared with our students and families.

Official Name & Logo.

During the last few weeks there has been a lot of progress on establishing different aspects of the College and our school culture. Our official school name has been announced. The College is now know as Bemin Secondary College. "Bemin" means ring-tail possum in Bunurong.

The announcement of the College name has meant that we have been able to move ahead on our school logo.  The school logo is always of great importance as this becomes one of the ways our College will be recognised in the community and amongst other schools.

Bemin Secondary College is a dual campus secondary school. We welcome students to both the Junior and Senior campuses. This is unique to our local community.

Our logo represents the many students who are coming to join us from the schools in our area and the many experiences they bring with them. The colours of our logo speaks to the landscape we are on and share: the sky, the land, and the waterways.

I have attached a few updated photos from both of the sites. You can see very clearly that many buildings have their roof constructed. This is excellent as the builders are now shifting focus to fitting out the inside of the buildings. Furniture has been chosen for the school and many of the key areas have joinery installed. You are able to see from the photos that landscaping and even car parks are being constructed. It is very exciting to see the rapid progress that has been made since earlier this year.

Recruitment

The College has begun an intensive recruitment drive. Over the coming months I will continue to advertise teaching and education support staff positions in order to staff both campuses ready for the opening next year. This is a challenge as we are needing at least 18 full time teachers across a range of subjects for next year. All positions are advertised on the Department of Education Recruitment online page under Bemin Secondary College. In our next edition I will introduce some of our teachers and leaders for 2024.

Partnerships

I have also begun to build partnerships with key organisations in order to establish links for our students and possibly access programs that will support both their learning and wellbeing. I have met with the Centre for Multicultural Youth and Head start Apprenticeship & Trainee Program; Virtual School Victoria and visited Wyndham Tech School. Assistant Principal, Sandale Ambegoda, writes more about these opportunities on the Teaching and Learning page.

Meeting our students

Sandale and I have begun to meet our new 2024 Year 10 students. I have had the pleasure of presenting to all the Year 9 students who are coming to the Senior campus in 2024 from Truganina P-9 College, Baden Powell P-9 College and Tarneit P-9 College. We will also be contacting our students who are coming from other nearby schools into year 10. In early Term 4 we will begin to extend our focus on supporting the transition of Year 6 students into Year 7. Presenting and meeting the students enables them to learn more about the College but also provides them with the opportunity to ask questions.

I look forward to sharing more about the progress of the College early next term and meeting you all on Tuesday 31st October on our Information evening at Garrang Wilam Primary school.

Regards,

Joanne Camozzato
