School Illness

From Joanne, Administration

Is my child well enough to come to school?

Students who are unwell should not attend school. If a student becomes unwell during the school day, they may be directed to the First Aid Room and monitored by staff. Depending on the nature of their symptoms, staff may contact parents/carers or an emergency contact person to ask them to collect the student.

If your child has not been at school in the morning due to feeling unwell or illness, we ask that you please do not send them to school later in the day when they become “better”.

Children with certain infectious diseases, and children who have been in contact with certain infectious diseases, are required to be excluded from school for a specified period.

The DH school exclusion table identifies which infectious diseases require exclusion and for what period.

Ask yourself:

  • Is my child well enough to comfortably take part in the day’s activities?
  • Will my child pass on their illness to other children or staff?
  • Will my child’s teacher be able to care for my child without it impacting on their ability to care for other children?
  • If I felt like this, would I go to work?
  • If you are unsure, speak to your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Primary responsibility for the prevention and control of infectious diseases lies with individuals, families and public health authorities.

Schools are not expected to provide expert advice or treat students, which is the role of medical practitioners and health authorities.
