Library

"Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life."

 — Sidney Sheldon

We recently celebrated Book Week at Brigidine with various challenges and activities.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) announced the

Book of the Year for Older Readers

Neverland- by Tom  Taylor ill Tom Taylor illustrator Jon Sommariva

won that award.  This is the first time a Graphic Novel has won the award.

The Judges commented that  “The characters are believable, and thematic elements of belonging and forgiveness are presented authentically and skillfully. A stunning book with a potent message wrapped up in a ripping good yarn package” (CBCA website)

Completely Normal and The Other Side of Tomorrow, received  Honour awards and both books are in our library collection.

We joined the State Library of NSW webinar which featured popular Young Adult (YA) author Felicity Castagna talking about her writing process and ideas.

As part of our celebration of books and reading, we piled the books that were being returned to the library after being read, to make an ambitious tower of 197cm, the same height as Mr. Woolaston! We have a life-sized image of him as we track our growth. We discovered that also part of the challenge was building the tower!!

There were several book challenges throughout the week

  1. Create a book meme-

All students and staff enjoyed a Leaders are Readers quiz where they had to match an image of their teachers as younger people with a book they remembered reading as a teen.

We are filling our walls with what we are reading posters.

You can join too. It will only take a minute!

1. Visit the  I’m reading website,

2 complete (needs only your first name and the name of what you are reading)

3. Select from the images provided

4. download poster

5. Send the poster to rachel.hodge@syd.catholic.edu.au

At lunch times we have been having a book giveaway from the books we have removed from our collection. To keep the group current and relevant, the library occasionally needs to remove books and the students had the opportunity to grab some of these books. We have an order of new books to fill the empty book spaces.

We also enjoyed a lunchtime Bookface activity!

Thank you to both the students and staff for supporting Book Week in 2023!
