Science Week in Preschool - Fostering a sense of wonder

Science Week has enabled the Preschool children to be immersed in the world of Science. Using the metaphor of ‘the environment as the third teacher,’ we have been exploring many elements and experiments. Each day drew a different inspiration for us to explore. Every area has been set with a provocation to promote children’s curiosity and wonder. As Educators, we have been co-researchers alongside, allowing for children to be the drivers of their inquiry. Children have taken on the roles of inquirers, investigators, researchers and problem-solvers.

These learning and thinking skills are clearly fostered and promoted through the Early Years Learning Framework. These have underpinned the intent of educators in the way they have structured group collaborations and during times of independent inquiry to ensure all children are engaging in the world of science and growing in their knowledge and understanding surrounding the world around them and the theories within.

Our questions for you to ponder;

  • Did you know popcorn can dance?
  • Have you ever made water walk?
  • Were you aware that eggs can bounce?
  • Have you ever seen fireworks in a jar?

The use of common household items such as water, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, eggs, food dye and popcorn kernels provided the catalyst for children to use their prior knowledge and experiences to form the basis for their own hypotheses. Educators have supported reflective thinking by encouraging children to consider why things happen and what can be learned from these household items through the lens of scientific thinking.

The simplicity of a magnifying glass has empowered children to explore the experiments deeper, by closely viewing objects and materials to see chemical reactions, which has empowered deep conversations and dialogue between Educators and children.

Science Week within the Preschool has challenged and provoked curiosity, empowering children to embrace the world of science, and the joy of collaboration. Our environment is a testament to our children who are inventors, mathematicians, scientists and creators of their own learning. This further strengthens the principles and practices that underpin our Early Years Learning Framework within the ELC.
