BOOK CLUB: A CELEBRATION OF READERS AND WRITERS

Book Club continue to thrive at Marian College as a fortnight club of choice, with many students across all year levels making their way into the Resource Centre every second Wednesday. The agenda is always packed and lively, and the students’ spirits are high, as we explore our collective love of reading and the ongoing sharing of literature-based ideas.

The most recent Book Club gathering, on Wednesday 16 August, saw the students eagerly share their ideas and insights into next week’s Book Week, a popular staple and adventurous time for the College. During this time, the Book Club members will help run a range of activities during one of the week’s allocated days. Students then had the chance to showcase their skills on the page as they randomly selected from a range of novel starters and then crafted their own ‘flash fiction’ in just over five minutes. While the standard was high, as it always is, Ms. Sofie Norello, Ms. Kathy Justice and Mr. Vito Milana awarded Year 10 student Claire Oram with first place for her tale of intrigue, which is reproduced below.

I congratulate all the students for their commitment to Book Club and always proactively contributing to the reading culture of the College.

I WAS HAPPY WITH MY DISCOVERY

I was happy with my discovery. Its eye came to life with the unknown gemstone in its system. A machine which would take 100 suns to fully power. It stood up, staring at me curiously. An urge called me to come forward. Mysterious singing followed my path then its jaws suddenly opened, displaying thousands of sharp teeth, swallowing me whole. I was no longer so happy about my discovery.
